I have a Nissan Altima 02. The heater recently went out. took it to get looked at but they wanted to charge me like 1,300 for a heating core. Now it only works when Im driving in high speeds because when im at a stop sign or in slow traffic it's cold air.
Have you tried asking them to just flush the system, as well as reverse flush? Sometimes that will clean it out enough to get you where it needs to be for now. If not, I'd try that, at another shop, obviously, if for no other reason, a second opinion. Try one that specializes in radiators if there is one in your area. If no luck, and your handy at all, I can tell you what I did to clean core out a few times that worked pretty well for me, and only cost me about $20-$30, and a little time. Let me know if your up to it, but I'd gamble the cost of a flush, and my method, before I'd pay $100's of dollars for new core.
If problem occurs only @ idle check coolant level (cold). If low inspect for external leaks. If no leaks found you most likely have a slow head gasket leak into one or more cylinders. This is a very common indecent for Altimas and usually the first signs are low heat @ idle followed by misfire when started after cold soak (over night) then overheating problems.
