Is the engine on?
if so, check the transmission fluid to make sure it is at proper level. automatic transmission needs a certain amount of fluid otherwise they will not engage bands and discs.
if it is at proper level, you need to have the transmission checked out by a pro. it could be broken pump seals or burned clutch plates

In turbo hydro 700 why would forward gears make the rear wheels go in reverse

Your differential is upside down. Ford model T's had the same problem. It was possible to mount the rear axle upside down which made the car go forward in reverse and backward in forward gears.

What could the problem be with 1999 villager wont go forward or reverse?

I forget the name, but it could be the shift connecttion. It the connection point behind the shifter in the car and the transmission. The port disconnected mine in my car cause they couldn't figure out how to shift it. It basically put the car into nuetral. No forward no reverse. But engine runs fine.

98 vw beetle wont go in reverse

I have a 1998 and I just confronted the same problem. It seems to take like 1 gear in reserve and like 2 gear in 1 gear. Any thoughts? I don't really it should be the transmission since it still works going forward in 2 different gears. Thanks.

My car will not go in reverse but will go forward

typical FWD GM transmission issue, the transmisson will have to be rebuilt. You could try a fluid flush and filter change but there are only 2 discs pack for reverse. Which makes them fail very easily
