yes you can as long as it is 88-98 years the main electical plug may be diferent just cut and splice the wires together blue to blue red to red so on if thare is two of one coler twist them together it will work fine.
Check for exhaust leaks. Esp Leaks toward the front of the car. Hold your hand over the tail pipe using a rag and see where the loud hissing noise comes from. Repair the leaks and I bet the backfiring goes away
