99 chevy malibu fuel mileage going down. Use to get 320 driving long distance now only 200 in town. Fuel guage does not work so I have to watch miles between fill ups
Re: 99 chevy malibu fuel mileage going down. Use to
Check you mileage if the car has over 100,000 miles and you have not had a tune up it maybe time for spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and spark plug wires if needed

The MAP sensor should only throw a check engine light. Either a bad ignition control module or a fuel pump are going to cause the issue your stating. Start with those, dont be afraid of forums as well, very good DIY's to be found. The 3100 V6 is a 3100 v6 no matter if its in an impala or a malibu or even oldsmobiles and buicks. Good luck.
Sounds like you have a bad thermostat on your coolant loop. Cars will shut down to save the engine. If youve noticed really poor gas mileage just before this problem that is normally a good indicator since a bad stat increases the fuel-to-air ratio
That all depends on previous owners maintenance. Overall, they were a very reliable cars. Before you buy you might have an independent shop do an inspection for you, so you know what you have going in.
Yes, you could wire them to run anytime the ignition is on, but that is not a good idea. Have you checked the fuse? Have you checked to see if the fans actually work? Turn the A/C on and one fan should run continuously. Have you replaced the thermal relay for the cooling fan? You need to just find out why they do not work. Running them continuously is not a good idea. You want the engine to reach full operating temperature as soon as possible. And you do not want to be constantly cooling it down by running the fans all the time. This will cause poor fuel mileage.
hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful
either you have a fuel pump that went out, or your fuel pump relay went. These fuel pumps last around 100,000 miles, so if you're way under that, it's more than likely the relay, if you're close to that, it could be either.
The fuel level sensor is bad. The tank will have to be taken down to replace the level sensor. There is little fingers on the resistor that wear down and loose contact causing the gage to read incorrectly.
check fluid level, make sure proper fluid is in transmission otherwise take to trans shop to diagnse if level and type is correct(check at idle normal operating temp)
