This should be the same as a car, jack the front of the car up put stands under, remove front wheels, remove bottom cover (about 7 screws), Remove powersteering pump pully 3 bolts, remove and refit new belt and P/S pully, you might get away with not having to adjust alt but if you have to youll need a 13mm spanner to undo the locking bolt then pull the alt tight (its really tight u might need a bar), once all done replace in reverse order.

How do i change a alternator for a escort van 1.8 diesel van

This is for a 1999 1.8 Diesel 55 Escort Van.

You have to remove a few parts but its not a major dilema. Almost all work needs to be carried out from under the van, so it needs jacking up.

1. Disconnect battery. Loosen bolts on FR wheel, jack up high and take wheel off. MAKE SURE HANDBRAKE IS ON AND WORKING!!!

2. Inside the wheel arch is a cover that goes over the alternator, three bolts to remove.

3. From under the van you will see a tension wheel keeping the belt tight. It requires a star shaped fitting to loosen, if you dont have one you can use a small ratchet piece that grips it.

4. Once belt is loose remove the two nuts holding the tension wheel in place. Keep to one side and remember how it goes back.

5. You now have access to the three bolts holding the alternator in place. Its tight and a little tricky but persevere and they will come out.

6. Wiggle the old unit out, unbolt the two wires on the alternator, bolt back onto the new unit.

7. Do the rest in reverse. When putting tension back on the belt do not over tighten, belt should just feel firm.

Remember to connect the battery again! And use a volt meter to test battery. You should get around 14v with engine running.

Done.

My escort van is out of timing need to set timing again

YOU NEED TWO 6MM DRILL BITS, THERE ARE TWO HOLES TO PUT THESE IN, ONE ON THE CAMSHAFT AND THE SECOND ON THE PUMP. SLOWLY TURN THE ENGINE BY HAND UNTIL THE TWO HOLES LINE UP WITH HOLES BEHIND THEM, THEN PLUG WITH THE DRILL BITS. ITS NOW SAFE TO REMOVE THE BELT BY TAKING OFF THE TENSIONER AND LOCKING OFF. PUT ON THE NEW BELT AND RELEASE THE TENSIONER SLOWLY AND REMOVE THE DRILL BITS. TURN THE ENGINE BY THE NUT ON THE CRANK SHAFT A COUPLE OF TIMES. THEN PULL BACK THE TENSIONER ALL THE WAY, THEN LET IT GO SO IT SNAPS AGAINST THE BELT, IT IS NOW TENSIONED AND JOB DONE

My escort van when first starting up the steerin is stiff

could be alot of things but first guess would be your belt is slipping/ loose. Your belt would run your power steering and alternator (batt light), dampness could jump be contributing to make the belt slip a little. I would definitely advise you have it looked at though because if you loose your power steering and alternator when you are driving it can be a very scary situation. hope this helps :)

Alternator Replacement

You may have a self tensioner which applies belt tension with a spring.

Look for a spot to put a 1/'2"drive breaker bar on it and release the belt tension, then slide the belt off and install new belt. You may need a helper to remove the belt while you hold the tension off,
Its been awhile since I have seen an Escort, i may be wrong!
