1. Your coolant is low 2. Your thermostat doesn't close and needs to be replaced 3. The valve from the cooling system to the heater core is stuck 4. Your heater core is clogged

it could be that then wire to the sender unit ( not sensor as it is different ) is loose or shorting out on the head
there could be an air lock in the cooling system that is allowing spasmodic water flow passing the sender unit and sending the gauge to hot
if there is no coolant around the sender unit ,it will read cool and and flush will send it hot until the coolant subsides and then it will read cool
The heating coil is probably getting plugged up. You may have heat at idle or slow speeds, but once you get going, there is not enough coolant going through it to stay warm. Get the system flushed or replace the heating coil.

A/C increases Engine Temp in two ways.
1, extra 2-6hp load on engine.
2, hot condenser in front of radiator heating air going through cooling system.
A small difference in engine temp can be expected, but if the car is running hot get it sorted out.
check the coolant level first! and change the thermostat if need be. sit in car until the temp. guage reads normal temp. if it is normal, and still no good heat. it is possibly the thermostat thats sticking. when changing coolant remember to bleed air from system while putting fluid in. it may also need a good flush. good-luck !! i live here in ny and today the wind chill is 8 below zero.
These taurus' have a notorious problem with the blend door actuator(controls hot and cold air mixture) failing.This is located in the cab of the car underneath the dash right in the center.This is not a diy project unless you have fairly extensive mechanical background.What you can check with ease though is to make sure that your coolant is full, this can cause a no heat condition.Also get your car up to normal operating temp and place your hands on the inlet and outlet if the heater core hoses, on the engine side of the firewall, and make sure both hoses are hot, if they are both hot then it is a blend door issue, if not then you have a restricted heater core, you can back flush your heater core by removing the hoses and placing a garden hose to either side and flushing it thru. there is a valve in the hot line to the heater core, it may not be opening. or you might have to disconnect the heater hoses and flush the heater core, stop leak will some times stop up core since tubes are very small
Had the same problem with my 97 dakota (3.9). I reversed flushed the heater core and the problem is solved... too much heat. Instead of flushing the heater core normally, reverse the intake and exit lines and flush. Whatever is lodged in the core's intake should be discharged.
