Question about 1984 Toyota Pickup Deluxe

Toyota 22R engine trouble... Stumped.

The vehicle is a 1984 Toyota 4 x 4 truck. I just obtained it in a non working condition, looking for body parts, but the engine is VERY clean as well, and I would like to drop it into my other Toy; If I can get it to run, that is...

The engine cranks rather lazily, and sounds / smells like it's firing, but will not start.

The carb is getting fuel, we have spark at the coil & plugs, I've checked every main ground wire I can find, but haven't gotten too deep into the wiring harness yet, I'm hoping to avoid that.

Just before this truck was abandoned at a friends house over a year ago, the previous owner apparently replaced the water pump himself, and did a poor job of it from what I can tell. There are GLOBS of silicon all along the seam between block & water pump. Could this be contributing to the problem?

I don't think it's an electric bug. My friend has already replaced most of the electric components under the hood before giving up and passing the truck on to me.

I'm about out of ideas; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plugged Catalytic Converter. Disconnect the tailpipe from the exhaust manifold at one of the two adapters that comes BEFORE the catalytic converter. You don't have to drop the whole tailpipe, just get it out of the way so the exhaust can shoot right out of the manifold. Try starting the engine with the tailpipe / catalyst disconnected.

By it being a old truck.i would check or change timing chain.also do a compression test on all cylinder.to make sure you have good compression.low or no compression will make a engine hard to start.

You say have spark and good plugs and they are sparking, you have gas and its good gas not old. You can try Lighter fuel for old school cigarette lighters or some good gas, pour a little bit down the carb. Next try a shot of ether, not much just a shot. Do you suspect it is out of time?. You can loosen the distributor lock bolt and turn the distributor a bit just a bit to the left then back a bit past the staring point be sure to mark it so you can put it back if this does not work.

As for the gobs of silicone on the water pump seam, no that is not a problem, it just looks bad but is ok.

If your not overheating or losing coolant, its more than likely engine oil burning. If it is coolant related, possible blown head gasket.

What gear ratio is my rear end in my 1984 toyota truck 22r , i need a new rearend for the four wheel drive and need to know the ratio

It's written on the chunk. You should be able to see the number by getting under the truck and looking. You may need a wire brush (to clean the area) to be able to find it. Look closely.

I noticed Antifreeze in the Oil at the oil pan gasket. What is the most likely issue?

Blown head gasket is the most likely ... do not ignore this ... have your mechanic look at it as soon as possible ... tomorrow is not too soon. This only gets worse and more expensive with every mile you drive.

Hi I have a Toyota 4runner with 2.4 22r engine which i bought with a blown headgasket. Can anyone tell me if this is a common problem or if there is anything else i should check on the vehicle to be safe...

Man that's alot of miles. I would check the trans. for shure.
On the head gasket I would make sure that the block is worth rebuilding. You may be better off to get a used engine and trans combo for about the same money as getting someone to fix that one.
