Question about Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

Stutters before it shifts. After it shifts RPM goes up but it wont accelerate. Only goes up to about 60mph and it takes forever to get there. The check engine light came on. All the fluids are fine, nothing leaking, nothing over heating.

Are you sure it's the transmission? You can hear and feel it shifting just fine.

  • caligirljb Dec 13, 2009

It stutters when it's idling too though.

  • caligirljb Dec 13, 2009

Sorry for not specifying. It does it when it's in gear.

The internal automatic clutches and bands are bad and the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced. there not much more i can say other than that. tranny's are funny like that but when they start to slip there is no saving them. specially when they are that bad. from what you stated it is about to stop all together. hth and let me know if yo have any more question. good luck

yes i am positive! from what you have stated it is slipping severely and it would still shift but would not accelerate good. and the rpms tell me the motor is producing power but it is just not getting to the wheels. but yes it is deffently the transmission if your rmp's go up but the car will not go faster. sorry for the bad news. hope you make out okay. if you give me year make and model i can give you a quote for a used tranny install or rebuilt. if that helps

also the shutter before it shifts is a sign of the clutches slipping. just want to add that so you knew.

well that a holw different ball game and you should have said that in the first place. i thought just before it shifted it did it. well if it shutter while sitting at idle in park? or in gear? very important! let me know

if it does it in gear and not in park i have to stand behind my diagnoses. it really is all adding up to a transmission or because it does it at idle in gear it may be the torque converter. but will need to be check by a transmission shop either way. that is the only thing that change with it being at idle. better than the hole transmission but need to be tested correctly by a shop.

if it was in my shop i would be taken pressure checks of the transmission fluid and a test drive with gauges on it. just to be sure and to narrow it down to the torque converter or transmission. the torque converter is what transfers the power from the motor to the transmission front pump and acts like a manual transmission clutch.

let me know if you have more question

Won't accelerate faster than 55mph. Loses pwr..

When you losing speed, do you lose RPM? This is important. 1- If you don't lose RPM then you have a problem with your torque converter. 2- If you lose RPM then you have a problem with fuel air mixture and this is controlled by ECM. Usually ECM is not a problem, but the problem is coming from other sensors contributing fuel: air mixture control like Air mass flow control ans Oxygen Sensor besides the throttle body valve is gummed up and need a through clean. So try to address the last one first then follow in reverse order if the case is in # 2. Good luck.

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.
