Water pump going out how do i replace it

  • Removal of the Fan Shroud and Drive Belts
    • 1 Drain the cooling system. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the petcock valve on the lower corner of the radiator. Open the petcock valve to drain the system.
    • 2 Remove the bolts that connect the fan shroud to the radiator core and remove the fan shroud.
    • 3 Loosen the alternator adjustment bolt and slide the alternator toward the engine. Remove the drive belt.
    • 4 Loosen the adjustment bolt for the air conditioning compressor, and slide the compressor toward the engine. Remove the drive belt.
    • 5 Loosen the adjustment bolt on the power steering pump and slide the pump toward the engine. Remove the drive belt.
  • Removal of the Water Pump
    • 1 Disconnect the bypass hose from the water pump by loosening the hose clamp and pulling the hose off the fitting.
    • 2 Remove the bolts that connect the water pump to the engine block, and remove the water pump and engine fan as an assembly.
    • 3 Remove the four retaining nuts that connect the fan assembly to the water pump. They will be located between the fluid coupling and the water pump pulley.
  • Installation of the Water Pump
    • 1 Attach the fan assembly to the new water pump by sliding the pulley then the fluid coupling onto the water pump and reinstalling the retaining nuts.
    • 2 Clean any old gasket material off the water pump mounting surface on the engine block.
    • 3 Place the new water pump gasket on the water pump mounting surface.
    • 4 Slide the new water pump into position and reinstall the mounting bolts.
    • 5 Reconnect the bypass hose by sliding the hose over the fitting and tightening the hose clamp.
  • Reinstalling the Drive Belts and Fan Shroud
    • 1 Reinstall the the drive belts for the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor and alternator. Tighten the adjusting bolts.
    • 2 Measure the deflection of each belt to make sure the belts are properly tightened. Measure deflection by placing a straight edge along the belt against the accessory pulley and the water pump pulley. Push down on the belt and measure the distance between the belt at the midpoint and the straight edge. It should be between 1/2 and 1/4 inch. Any more and the belt needs to be tightened. Loosen the adjustment and slide the accessory away from the engine to tighten.
    • 3 Drop the fan shroud into position and reinstall the bolts that secure it to the radiator.
    • 4 Close the petcock valve on the radiator and fill the cooling system with fresh coolant.
    • 5 Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Replace a water pump need help asap

Jaguar S TYPE 1999 2000 2001 2002 Service Repair Manual They only want 10 bucks for it and it would be easier! The only hope i could find was this posting... Youll need to remove the radiator cowl and the fan and viscous coupling; they all come off in order. Then you need to drain the coolant and take off the hoses going to the thermostat housing which sits on top of the water pump. Theres one bolt in particular right underneath the thermostat housing that almost impossible to access, takes forever. You'll find the bonnet gets in your way too as its forward tilting. Take it off if you can stand the pain. With the thermostat housing removed you can see the water pump; if youre lucky it will come apart easily but more likely youll struggle to get the pulley off and theres hardly any clearance to get at the retaining centre nut. Ignore the book and pull the whole assembly out in one go if you can, dont try to get the pulley off the pump, its a nightmare. Replace the thermostat while your in the pain zone anyway. Reassembly is a straight reversal. The whole thing is a pain in the *** and I'd pay not to do it again. Hope this helps.

    Best of luck to ya!

Engine was overheating need to know if a tube is supposed to go from the radiator to the engine coolant

you should have one upper radiator hose, one lower radiator hose, a small diameter hose that runs over the top of your radiator starting from the radiator cap going left across the top and then to your coolant reservoir and another from your thermostat housing to the firewall for the heater core the upper radiator hose should also go to your thermostat housing. the lower radiator hose goes to your water pump This hose routing is only for a 4 liter straight 6 I'm not sure about the V8 or the 2.5 liter motors

How do i change a water pump on 1996 grand cherokee limited V8

    I'll assume you have a 4.0l

The 4.0L engine is equipped with a reverse rotation (counterclockwise) water pump. The word REVERSE is stamped or imprinted on the cover of the viscous fan drive and on the inner side of t he fan. The letter R is stamped onto the water pump impeller. When replacing water pump, ensure proper pump is installed. Installation of the wrong water pump will cause engine overheating.

NOTE:On models with 4.0 L engine, front grill must be removed to access radiator draincock. Draining cooling system can be accomplished by removing drain plug from side of block as well as by loosening radiator draincock. Drain plug is located on lower left side of engine block.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect electric cooling fan connector. Remove electric cooling fan and electric fan shroud assembly (if equipped).
Loosen, but do not remove, 4 water pump pulley-to-water pump hub bolts and 4 viscous fan-to-idler pulley nuts. Remove accessory drive belt. Remove 4 viscous fan to idler pulley nuts, and remove fan and shroud together.
Remove 4 water pump pulley bolts and remove pulley. Remove power steering pump and bracket. Disconnect heater hoses and lower radiator hose at water pump. Remove 4 water pump retaining bolts. Remove water pump.

    to install just reverse procedures

What should be the operating temp of Grand Cherokee on warm day? Mine sometimes runs 240-250 degrees

U didn't say the engine, if it is a 6cylinder then around 195-200 F, if a V8 they run very hot, around 225 F, so you have a problem, is the coolant clean? no rust present? I would suspect that you need the radiator pulled and roded out by a radiator shop.

This IS EXACT Procedure Bu The BOOK
    REMOVAL
    1. Drain cooling system.
    2. Loosen fan clutch attaching bolts.
    3. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and remove shroud and fan.
    4. Remove drive belt.
    5. Disconnect lower radiator hose, heater hose and bypass hose from water pump.
    6. Remove fan, spacer, water pump pulley and fan shroud.
    7. Remove A/C compressor/power steering pump bracket and accessories to clear water pump stud bolt.
    8. Remove water pump attaching bolts and the water pump.
    INSTALLATION
    1. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten water pump retaining bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs.
NOTE: All water pumps have a sealed bearing integral with the water pump shaft. The bearing requires no lubrication. A bleed hole in the pump housing allows water that may leak past the seal to be thrown out by the slinger. This is not a lubrication hole. If the pump is damaged and requires repair, replace it with a new pump or a rebuilt one.
