I need to see how the belts are routed \

The pullis dont seem to line up and my alternator belt wont stay on

Unless you have a damaged pulley - all the pulleys for one belt should line up. Air conditioning compressors are often on a different belt and the pulley will not be in line with the alternator. If you keep throwing an alternator belt I would check for something mounted imcorrectly or damaged.

Not trying to insult you but it sounds like you might have routed one or both belts wrong. I've done it lots of times thinking I would remember the routing! If no label under the hood and not in owners manual, your local parts store or an online search will get you the right belt diagram. However, routing belts wrong usually results in the belt being too short or too long, and they wont stay on.

Also, check any vacuum lines or electrical connectors that you may have disturbed while changing belts and tensioner.

You will either need a smaller belt or have to modify the brackets.

I have a 1984 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton with V8 318. It has dealer installed a/c also air pump. It looks like it takes at least three belts, maybe four. The truck has been stored for a while and I am not sure that...


You should have a belt routing decal in the engine bay somewhere or under the hood. If the belts are on now and lined up, adjust as needed. If they won't adjust anymore replace with 1 inch shorter belts. The power steering and the air pump usually take seperate belts. The air pump don't take much to power, they usually run off the third groove on the water pump. A/C, Alt. and PS will all run around the crank. Hope this helps some, if not you might could find a Haynes repair manual at the parts store.

this is farely easy to figure out from looking at your pullies. ribbed pullies normaly take the ribbed side of the belt and smooth pullies take the smooth side of the belt. i would start at the tentioner pully (which is smooth) the put the inside of the belt around the 2 nearest pullies and weave it alternating in and out of the rest of the pullies.

Replace the alternator drive belt for 2004 dodge stratus 4 cyl belt is off the pullies and dont know which way it goes


LOOK ONLINE OR EVEN BETTER, THERE IS A DECAL UNDER THE HOOD WITH THE BELT ROUTING, IF NO ONE EVER REPLACED THE HOOD.

Where is the tensioner for the serpentine belt on a 98 plymouth neon the pullies dont seem to line up and the belt wants to keep coming off


Sounds like either the belts routed wrong or the tensioner isn't tensioning anymore. Any pulley that seems to have no pump alternator etc. should be one or two look for one that has a spring or with an arm that moves a wrachet could be inserted into a square hole on it to pull it back in many cases. Some wont have the fitting though and you'd have to use a pry bar or something. Any way hope it helps

Drive belt installation, need to get belt over top alternator pully, do I loosen one of the pulleys to accomplish this ?


there is a tensioner as you face the engine on the left side, install the belt around the pulleys using the underhood belt routing. using a 3/8 ratchet pull the tensioner and then put the belt on thealternaor pully.

For the 3.0L Vulcan, you have a tensioner that is located just below the power steering pully. Use a 15mm wrench or the 15mm shallow well socket that comes in a Serpentine Belt tool to push the tensioner toward the rear of the engine compartment. Take the old belt off and route the new belt. The belt begins at the crankshaft pully, goes under and around the a/c compressor, up around the power steering pump, around (with the flat edge) the idler pully, around the alternator, the flat edge then sits against the tensioner and back around to the water pump pully. You should have a belt routing diagram on the underside of the hood just above the serpentine pully assembly.

My car is a VW golf Gti mk3 8v 2.0L, Alternator / water pump drive belt has snapped and been lost. I have new belt but I'm unsure of routing around the 3 pulleys. does the alternator act as the tensioner??


loosen the alternator and push the alternator to-wards the engine,put your new belt on ,fitting around the 3 pulleys once fitted look and see that the belt is in line.If your happy the belt is lined put a small bar between the engine and alternator and force the alternator out towards the front this should tension your belt tighten bolts on alternator.;at the longest point between two pullys in the middle of the belt move belt up and down with fingers if tension is right it should not move more than about 150ml,hope this helps you.adrian

Serpentine belt for 1998 mercury tracer


Hey there MSM,
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator. The routing diagram is on one of the radiator supports.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
