Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

My 2000 VW Bug is a diesel. It won't start when the temp. is below 40 degrees. At first I thought it was a battery problem because it makes a clicking sound after I try to start it. I just bought a new battery and had the electrical system tested. I live in an apartment building and have no garage to help keep it warm. Help!

Hi,

If you are hearing a clicking noise and the engine refuses to turn over at all when you turn the key then you have a faulty solenoid. This is typified by a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition and a total refusal of the starter motor to turn the engine at all.

The solenoid is part of the starter. Typically it has a terminal for a thick power feed wire from the battery, and a thinner terminal for the current supply wire to a switching mechanism in the solenoid.

However, in the case that the starter motor is turning the engine over but the car is refusing to start the problem undoubtedly lies with one or more engine glowplugs not operating correctly. The clicking sound you hear in this case may be associated with the relay that operates the glowplug sequence.

On a diesel engine the glowplugs are an essential starting aid as heat generated by the glowplugs is directed into the cylinders, and warms the engine block immediately surrounding the cylinders. In colder temperatures if there is a problem anywhere in the glowplug circuit the vehicle simply will not start no matter how long the engine turns over.

I hope this helps - if so please do rate my answer. If you wish to clarify anything please do post up a comment and I will be happy to respond.

Many thanks for using FixYa.

Ford 2008 F-350 remote starts great in warm weather will not start in cold. all lights glow plugs ect working just wont start truck and only if 35 degrees and below.

Since batteries lose almost half their cranking power at freezing, and since diesels require much higher fuel temps to start than gasoline engines, many recommend using a block heater whenever the temperature is under 35-40 degrees if starting becomes a problem.

Toyota lucida hard to start most times. occasionaly ok. 2.2 diesel. everything seems to work as should

in cold weather diesel gels up and sometimes causes a no start issue..a cetane fuel additive helps with this issue. if temps go below 20 degrees, add a quart per tankful of cetane to the fuel to help start on cold mornings. also diesels require more amperage to crank than gas engines do..thus a stronger battery is needed..

2000 vw new bettle diesel won't start battery dead when i bought it touched it w/starting fluid cranked cut off

If the engine does not reach 300 rpm while cranking..engine will not start.

It needs good battery power to crank these with spare power to run the electronics.

If with good battery if fires and immediately stops, and the little 'yellow car' is illuminated in the cluster.... the immobiliser is active and you need a shop to fix it.

BTW..Stop with the Easy Start fluid already. You'll break a piston ring or worse...such as....the Glow Plugs will cause a back fire and you will likely strip the timing belt...major repairs...like $3500 and up.

2000 bettle 1.9L turbo will only start if you unplug coolant temp sensor

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case, I strongly suggest that you replace the coolant temp sensor. Looks like it's faulty and grounding the circuit. The car's computer can detect it that's why it won't start but once you disconnect it, it will for the coolant sensor is bypassed.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Anything below 0deg, it wont start unless plugged in and batteries die quick while cranking

anytime the temp is below 40 deg you should plug a diesel in overnight. it is better for your engine. also you could try double heating before actually try starting.

My F250 will not start when it is cold out

Gasoline engines work with a spark plug, where an electrode ignites the fuel mixture. Diesel engines operate on the principle of heat and pressure. Compression ratios are very high in diesel engines and when the air is compressed into a very confined space it heats rapidly, then the fuel is injected and combusts. Most diesel engines have a "wait to start" light when you first turn the ignition to on. If the temp is below normal, I might would allow for a few extra seconds for the glow plugs to heat up. The block heater will help though, b/c it raises the temp on the engine and allows for it to build the heat neccesary for combustion.

2000 VW Beetle will not start in cold, runs fine above 40 degrees

I was just reading the owners manual for my 2000 beetle and it says the diesel fuel has a problem with the wax separating from it below 40 degrees. Put the car in a warm garage and it will start.
