Question about 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD

2 Answers

1998 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.2L, AT, 149K mi won't start. Won't crank, just a single click when turning the key. Other electrical items (windows, radio, lights, etc) seem to work ok. Pulled battery and had it tested. Tested good. Even swapped relays of like type in fuse box, with no change in symptoms. Same symptoms when attempting to jump start. Any ideas?

It appears to be holding a charge. Reads about 12.8vdc when off the charger and no load. Stayed that way for over a week (off charger). Reads 13.2vdc when on the charger.

Ummm... This may sound like a stupid question, but where would I find the crank? Is it attached to one of the pulleys where the serpentine belt is?

Try turning motor over by hand, using a socket on crank, if motor turns over then possible starter motor

the crank is in the center of the engine towards the bottom, it is held on by a larger bolt, 19 to 22 mm DO NOT REMOVE IT just simply put a breaker bar on in and turn it clockwise, all you are doing is verifying that the engine has not seized, turn it aabout one revolution. it will be a bit hard to turn but not imppossible, if it turns you likely need a starter motor. if its the starter you here one single thump when the bendix engages starter to flex plate but starter drive is not spinning, replace the starter

Daniel, If battery is known to be good, could be bad connections at battery, starter/solenoid, or ground on engine/frame, battery cables also could be bad with build up of corrosion internally. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

well if ur not getting spark and u changed all of the ignition components lets think about the computer in order for the ignition to work you have crankshaft position sensor that fires the fuel injectors and the spark change that and if still nothing then change the camshaft postion sensor that sensor tells the computer that the 1 piston has came all the way up and it tells the crankshaft sensor to do its thing

2003 lexus es300 won't start... radio lights and windows work. Tried a jump start, still doesnt work...

Are you saying the engine cranks but won't start, or the engine won't crank ?
If the engine does not crank, you would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch as well as the ground connections.

Hi, I have a problem with a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 series 5.2 Liter. It will crank over but won't start every once in a while it will start and run for about 20 seconds, then it dies and won't start...

check all your vacuum lines. if there is a vacuum leak, the truck will crank, but not start. if you need a vacuum diagram, go to create a profile it's free, add vehicle. put in the info of your dodge ram. then from the main screen, where it says select a category, select vehicle repair guide. on the next screen select emission controls. on the next screen where it says select a chapter, select vacuum diagrams. as you scroll down just click on the diagram for your engine. hope it helps. good luck.
