Check engine light on after the gas guage randomly

On my 2008 Chevy Malibu the check engine light is on after the gas guage randomly dropped from half full to empty. Then went back to normal, then back to empty after an hour. Now the gas guage is back to normal but the check engine light is on.

Take the car to AutoZone or Oreilly's and have the codes read. Write them down, and report back here for further help.

Fuel gauge sending unit is going bad. Mine did the same thing, starting back in May this year. I have it into a shop, and the part is hard to find. You're the third person I see on here with this problem. So far, costs at least $280+ to fix.

weird...first thing to do is get a scanner hooked up to see what caused the check engine light-free, at pretty much any retail auto parts operation-i wouldn't get overly concerned with the gas gauge right now, teh code that tripped the check engine light might explain that problem.

Check engine light on 2008 chevy malibu classic V6

I have the same problem right now. I am going to buy a new gas cap (since that is the cheapest possible fix) in hopes that will be why it's on. I am getting the code P0455 and that is a possiblility. fingers crossed. LOL

I have 2008 chevy malibu lt and I barely drive itt, well the othe day the check engine light came one I cecked oil ot good, checked gas cap it appears good

What you need to do is pull the error code from the computer. This takes a scanner tool, but some parts stores and lube shops may pull the codes for you. You must have the codes to know the offending system component.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu andthe gas guage stopped marking. Now it says its on empty and the check engine light is on.I need help to know what it is.

it is most likely a faulty fuel level sender in the tank, and the check engine light is on because of a fuel level sensor code. the tank will need to come out to change.

hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful

Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!
