Passenger side window will not go up. - 2002 Cadillac Deville

I heard a crack when the window opened, as if it was frozen to the door frame. Then it went down without a problem, stopped halfway, but would not go back up. I then opened it the rest of the way and now it won't go up at all. I can hear the motor running when I push the control for up or down, but the window does not move. How do I remove the door panel?

  • drcrowell Dec 12, 2009

Before I attempt to take the door panel off is there anything that should be keeping the window from simply being pulled up? If I can just pull the window up, how would you recommend that I pull it up? I know I don't want to grap it with anythin hard or it will shatter...right.

There are a number of things that could be causing this condition. To name a few, broken wires in the door jam, bad master switch, bad power window motor or bad window regulator. The other windows work properly? Did you hear a noise when you found the window will no longer go up? Does the window feel loose, can it be pulled up or pushed down? The first step is to remove the door trim panel and inspect the regulator. Cadillac uses a cable style regulator (window lift), it's not uncommon for the cable to get tangled or simply snap, resulting in a window that will no longer operate. If that checks out OK back probe the window motor with a digital volt meter and with the ignition on, press the window button and note the voltage reading. Should be around 12, or -12, depending if your pressing up or down. If you have power there the motor will have to be replaced. The motor and regulator are sold as a complete unit and is fairly easy to replace and reasonably priced at around $150.

If you can hear the motor turn and the window isn't going up or down the regulator cable snapped or the window motor gear is stripped. Not being in front of the door it's hard to tell you step by step how to remove it. I will try and find a diagram that will be helpful or possibly a step by step guide.

Well, I did find a tutorial on how to remove the door panel. However it is on a site i believe I'm not allowed to link to. So, go to google.com and search for "02 deville door panel removal" and it is one of the first hits.

One other thing. I did a quick search for the part on RockAuto.com and they have an AC delco window regulator for $75 with the motor. You may want to wait to remove the door panel until you have the regulator in hand.

If the window doesn't pull up with a firm hand grip i wouldn't use any sort of tools, pliers or otherwise to pull it up. It will likely shatter into a million pieces. If you need the window up you could remove the door panel, cut the cable and slide the window up. Then jam a piece of wood underneath the window to hold it up. If your in a rush you could go to a Cadillac dealer parts department and pick up the regulator, they probably have it in stock. Will probably be around $100 or so though, will probably be worth it.

Most any auto parts store should carry it for a few dollars. You may be able to get away with using a flat bladed screw driver to pry. Keep in mind, those door panels are pretty expensive if you happen to break it, a $5 investment can save a few hundred. Or at least not leave you with a rattling door when your done.

Yesterday I had the passenger's side window motor

Disconnecting the battery will cause this. It happened on my Mazda 6 and there should be instructions in your manual.
It will be something like this:

1. Turn ignition switch to "on" position.
2. Open passenger window completely from passenger side window switch.
3. Close passenger window completely from passenger side window switch, and hold switch for an additional 2 seconds.
4. Turn ignition back to "lock" position.

Passenger side window stopped working, is this a fuse problem? Driver's side is still functional.

It's not a fuse issue. Can you roll the window to the passenger side down with the drivers side panel? If you can then the control panel on the passenger side needs replaced. If you can't then the regulator/motor/tract for the window on the passenger side would need to be addressed.

My passenger side, and rear power windows dont work and my lights dim when i try and let the passenger side window down the rear windows cause the car to do nothing. when i first bought the car the rear...

The motor on the passenger side is shorted and is now tripping the circuit breaker. Odds are, the back window motor is also bad. You have to take the panel off to check the motor. You can power it directly to verify it has failed.

Sounds like the window regulator is malfunctioning. The vehicle should still be covered under the manufacturers warranty.
