Did you try putting in 2 wd and then drive backwards 5-10 feet? If you did try this and it didn't work, you could have a stuck gear in the transfter case, your hubs could be seized in the lock position or a bad actuator if you have push button 4x4

What you have is ALL Wheel Drive. There is no switching. It is in 4 wheel all the time.

You manual is here, but nothing about 4 wheel drive, which is kinda odd! That makes me think it is permanent 4 wheel drive.

What operate the 4x4 in the transfer box of the landrover freelander 1.8 Petrol. The switch on the gear lever works but the wires are disconnected and I see no switch or valve on the gearbox or transfer...

Freelander is permanent 4 wheel drive. The switch on the gear lever is for downhill decent control. These are usually diconnected when there is a problem with one of the ABS wheel sensors not working, causing three warning lights on the dash to display. Google Freelander Three Amigos.

Have a 2008 rav 4 need to know if all wheel dr is 4 wheel dr or when should you use it?

The RAV4 is a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
All wheel drive is when all four wheels have power at all times. This can be permanent or manual engaged. Clutches are used to prevent tire damage.
4 wheel drive is when one set of wheels has power and the other two can be engaged manually or automatically.
You should use 4 wheel drive when in mud or snow and extra traction is needed. 4 wheel drive can not be used on dry pavement.

Suspected rear wheel bearing problem, but is there a second bearing just at th drive shaft on the rear rhs that could be causing the noise.? 2005 freelander td4. Thanks billy

Hi Billy

If it is just a wheel breaing then it's not to much to worry about, they are fairly cheap and easy to do, the other bearing is from the 4 wheel drive system is is somewhat more problematic worst case is the diff / gearbox may have failed, does the wheel drive work well? is the noise more or less when in 2 wheel?

there is a few possiblities so get back to me with more info and I will be able to help.

4 motion no longer in motion drives like a 2 wheel drive

i take it you know that IT IS a front wheel drive car that goes into 4wd when needed.NOT a permanent 4wd (it uses the abs/esp/torson diff computerised drive system).to prove this block the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car and put a brick under a rear wheel, then slowly lower the car until the brick gets thrown backwards.proving that 2 wheels will remain still whilst one is spinning...(this test takes 2/3 people to do it right...BE CAREFULL.

My y reg freelander has a droning noise from back of car ,thought noise was berring .jackt up 1 back wheel tried to turn but seems 2 be still in gear

Possible tyre noise, Have tyres been changed from left to right lately. Each tread section wears at an angle and changing direction of rotation will create noise. Just a thought as i had this problem with a vauxhall.

Connect four wheel drive for a freelander land rover 2005

The Freelander, along with all Land Rovers are permanently in 4 wheel drive: You need to take the car to a workshop to see what is happening. Freelanders have big problems with the transfer box, this maybe the problem. When you reverse the car and put the car steering to full lock whilst reversing, do you feel that the car is blocking or binding, as though you have the brakes on. If so this is an indication that the transfer box is faulty. These boxes cannot be repaired, replacement only and are quite expensive.
Hope this helps
