Many honda's in this year suffer from a defective ignition switch, this is the electrical switch that is attached to the end of the ignition lock cylinder and is operated by the lock cylinder, it is very easy to replace, just remove the **** shell plastic covers from the steering column, the screws are in holes on the bottom half of the cover, once the covers are off u will see that the switch is very easy to remove, just 2 screws i think. here is the part number and a picture of that switch.

another issue can be the fuel pump, it is located inside the gas tank, to see if u are getting fuel spray starting fluid into the engine air intake, if the engimne starts u need a fuel pump, I assume u have already checked for spark at the plugs.

the ignition switch turns on everything in the car, except un-switched things like head lights, it will cause the engine to loose power to the engine controls, this includes the fuel injection and the ignition system, with out the switch working correctly u have a stall or a no start.. These are a real problem on your year and have in some cases been recalled by Honda.

If you mean the dash lights not coming on and car will not start then it could be the ignition switch needs changing because the contacts inside are not contacting ,you are getting a positive supply to ignition switch so starter turns ,radio will work via the accessory position side lights and main lights will work because of a seperate supply. This is not a common fault but it is possible ,have seen it twice in 40yrs a commer truck and i think but ?? a citreon or a renault .Need more information really to be sure and a quick probe with my 12v screwdriver light on a length of cable.Could also be a push in connector under the steering column ,multiplug in fuse box not connecting properly ,as stated ,12v probe light to trace the fault

    Their is no main relay

  • Colin Stickland

right i will try in layamns terms ,when you turn the key the first position is aux,so the radio will work if sitting in the car ,the next position is engine run ,then the spring loaded turn ast the end is for the starter motor ,now what i think is happening is the contact for the second part where the engine is in run position isnt making contact for whatever reason ,either the contact is burnt or corroded ,well same thing i suppose so when you turn the key the radio will work but then when you turn it to next position their is no power going to the ECU coil pack or the fuel pump.but when key is turned to the spring resistance bit then you have power passing straight through to teh starter and its turning ove but no power to the engine ,most likely cause is its overheated or just the heat in the contact over time and the contact has corroded away or the feed has become loose in the plastic housing and pulled backwards ,So you have to check it out with the probe light or a meter the contacts on the back of the ignition switch, now you will no boubt have 3 big wires and a thinner one ,now the thinner one is for aux then a 12v feed to the switch ,then 2 wires left ,so find the feed ,then turn ignition on and if iam correct you will not find another 12v but when key is turned to start you will find a 12v current and when key is released the light goes out .So if you put a switch between the 12v permanent supply and the dead wire then by turning the switch on you will ba able to use the car till you can order the new part

Even if radio and lights work, you still may not have enough power to turn starter. You could have loose or corroded battery cable connections. The connections are not tighly metal to metal contact.
Your solenoid could be bad. You can try have someone crank motor while someone else taps on solenoid to see if it frees up.
Or lastly but not as common is bad starter relay.

Either bad battery, bad ignition switch or a bad fuse or relay. You can test relays with an ohmmeter in the ohm setting to see if they are good. You can look through fuses to see if they are good. You can check and wiggle igntion wires and test power to and from them to see if it is bad. Could be bad tumbler. You can have battery and starter tested for free at part-store in or out of vehicle.
You can get free repair manual at autozone.com if you register for free. It's quite handy.

I would start with really cleaning the corroded contacts. You can use a
solution of baking soda and water to clean the corrosion. If the cables
are real bad you may want to replace. I always put grease on the top of
the terminal and on the cable end to keep from corrosion.
There is a starter relay which can be found in owner's manual or test all relays if needed.
Test battery. Check ignition wires. Check fuses.

The relay would be in steering column or up under dash board. They are not labeled so you have to refer to the owner's manual or chart on glovebox. The ignition switch should not be loose or wiggly. Try moving wire connector to see if there is a difference. If you have another key, try that as well.

97 dodge neon turn key have lights but no crank or no noises

Is the car still in gear? If it is, then it will not start till you put the car in park. I've done this before and the same thing happened, had radio, lights etc...till I put car in gear and it started. Check the gear selector, if it's not in park, then put it in park and try to start. Hope that helps.

2006 honda accord wont start. nothing happens when i turn it on, just a click. radio, lights and door chime work.vehicle will not jump start

First make sure the shift lever is properly in the park position. Hondas tend to have little problem in that area after a few years.
Second make sure battery terminals are clean and secure. Next you should try jumping the battery. A low battery may produce enough electricity to run the radio, lights, chimes etc but not enough to crank engine.

My 2000 honda accord has a continuiing problem of not wanting to start after I travel somewhere and turn off the engine. It takes about 30-40 minutes for it to start again. Happens in hot weather.

is the engine cranking and not starting? Or is there no crank? When this occurs check if some lights (on the instrument panel) aren't lit when the key is turned to the on position!! If there is unlit lights **** as engine, abs, airbag etc. Its your ignition switch!!(there is a TSB recall on 1997-2000 hondas. Check your local honda dealer for info on this. Ignition switch failure is common on honda vehicles and usually gets worst in warmer weather.

98 honda accord wont start took starter to shop which passed the test. Need to know what other problem it could be...key turns all the way lights, radio all that comes on but wont start?

check your starter relay. if the starter passed the test at the shop check to see if you are getting signal to your solenoid on the starter it shoul be the little post when you turn the key to the crank position, check to see if you have power at the big post which comes from your battery, check your grounds. check your fuses see if you have a crank fuse or an ignition fuse.

My 1997 honda accord wont start.....

Hi Matt

Follow the( + ) positive lead from the battery, to the starter, check the connections, if all OK, get someone to turn the ignition key to start, and give the starter a tap, on the selenoid, with a small hammer or a metal socket extension.

Good Luck !

Let me know the outcome !

Also a FixYa rating would be nice !
