The rear oxygen sensor is found on the catalatic exhaust pipe ,where does it lead to?

I'm not sure what type car you have, but I'm replacing the rear O2 sensor in my 2004 Honda Accord and it leads to a connector under the passenger seat. In my case, I had to push the passenger seat all the way forward and pull back the carpet a bit (luckily, it was pre-cut so it wasn't too bad). If you pull out the grommet underneath (where the wire feeds through). you'll see daylight when you pull the carpet back.

Where is o2 sensor?


It's always in the exhaust, that's what it measures or senses- the remaining oxygen content in the exhaust. So it is somewhere in the exhaust piping, anywhere from where the exhaust leaves the engine, which is the exhaust manifold, to the exhaust pipes leading off from the manifold. If you have a V-6 engine, some manufacturers put an oxygen sensor on each side or "bank" of the engine.
The oxygen sensor is never too far from the engine in the exhaust. Look for an electrical wire or wire set going to a piece sticking out of the exhaust. The main oxygen sensor, or sometimes two sensors, are placed always before the catalytic converter in the exhaust stream. For a different purpose, cars nowadays will also have an oxygen sensor AFTER the catalytic converter but still in the exhaust. The purpose is only to monitor the efficiency of the converter.

I am trying to locate the Oxygen Sensor on my 2003 Impala?


Chevrolet Impala comes equipped with two oxygen sensors, one on either side of the catalytic converter. Locating the sensors is as simple as crawling under the vehicle.

  1. Location
    • The bank 1, sensor 2 oxygen sensor is located downstream of the catalytic converter. To get to the sensor, crawl underneath the vehicle and trace the exhaust pipe until you reach the catalytic converter. Continue to follow the exhaust pipe until you reach the bank 1, sensor 2 oxygen sensor.

    Identification
    • You should be able to identify the oxygen sensor as a single wire about 3 to 6 inches long. The oxygen sensor is mounted to the exhaust pipe and should slightly protrude from the pipe.

    Function
    • The oxygen sensor is an important part of the vehicle exhaust system. The sensor tests the amount of air in the exhaust stream. It then sends this information to the engine control computer, which determines how much fuel is necessary to maintain a proper air-to-fuel ratio.

A code PO420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of reading

  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.

Getting P0420 code & P0303 code...why?

Possible SolutionsSome suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 error code include:

Code p0303 means one cyliner is misfireing. Check spark plugs and wiring cables. If one cylinder isn't working good that could be the possible couse for the first code P0420 and all other engine problems.

On the SOHC engine the front (A/F) oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the front catalytic converter. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the rear section of the front catalytic converter. On the DOHC engine the front oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the exhaust system, just past the crossover pipe. The rear oxygen sensor is located in the front section of the catalytic converter.

Not just a faulty catalytic converter will trigger this code. Many other issues can trigger this code.

  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Delayed spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Possible solutions:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter.
  • Replace Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

* Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
* An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
* The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
* Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold
