Question about 1995 Lexus ES 300

Open Question

Lexus ES300 idle

Maybe you could know, on the Lexus ES300 1995, applied vacuum to dashpot, stop lever screw adjusted to no clearance, should I turn it a little bit more? Throttle valve is stick at the beginning, I must push it a little bit harder. But only at the beginning. Is this OK? Is it for the idle?

I was seeking for the solution, my lex is shaking my hands on the steering wheel, when fully warmed up and idling. Too low RPM?

SOURCE: 96 lexus ls400. Car idles to high and sounds

The first thing I would do is remove the hose connected to the intake and see if there isa lot of blackish brown buildup on the plate, if there is you need to buy some top engine cleaner and with a tooth brush clean the throttle plate on the back side and also the pipe that it sits in. Over time Gum builds up from back fires that you can't feel and causes the plate to open up and gradually will cause this problem.
Check this first and if you find that it is dirty then let me know and I will tell you how to do a top engine clean to get it running better, I do this in a order that won't cost you as much. If there is build up in the engine it will also cause the engine not to get good fuel mileage. Check this first and let me know so I can help you save money, you can do the top engine clean yourself. As far as sensors go I do the simplest things first before moving on to the sensors.

It could be a idle air valve, a loose, unplugged or missing vacuum hose or a throttle position sensor.

SOURCE: my 1992 lexus ls 400 keeps stalling and idleis very low

Look for a small electric motor near the accelerator cable and near the top of the valve cover.

It's call IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) motor.

It's job is to increase the idle when load is added.
Example: turning on headlight, turning on AC.

Testing it is simple.

Warm up you car for 10 minutes.

Locate the IAC motor

turn on loads.....AC,headlights,etc

The motor should move the idle up

If the motor does not increase the RPM then it can be stick.

Try to give it few gentle taps to free up the gears.

It can be clean if your are up to it.

This electrical motor is very expensive. Please handle it with care.

The other trouble spot are

old accelerator cable

TPS Throttle position sensor

I will do a simple tune up and gas treatment before starting to replace any parts.

Please post reply on the comment window.

Why does a carbureted motor run fine at cruising speeds, and cold starts but at warm idles and coming to a stop sometimes shuts off and idle surges?

Maybe float level is low. If possible split top off carb to observe wet level inside carb. Thinking 2 things for deceleration that changes pressure in fuel line is volume push by fuel towards front components and maybe Evaporative Emissions is getting solid fuel instead of vapors from splash.

Idle dashpot is part on some early carbs to allow throttle gradual closing. Some are vacuum controlled with what is called a "vacuum tree" which routes the vacuum to the dashpot by temperature. Vacuum tree could have wrong hose routing or THERMOSTAT for engine could be too cold.

How do I adjust the idle on an 85 olds cutlas ciera

Check out the vacuum hoses going to a part called a dashpot. There are also temperature valves called vacuum trees which reroute the vacuum to make the dashpots work after a certain temperature.

Often you must disconnect vacuum hoses to remove the air cleaner and this maybe when the problem stated.

1984 Toyota tercel wagon

Although this isn"t a proper fix, and may affect emissions, I ran accross this problem on a friend's 87 2wd wagon.

There is a dashpot that controls a lever the Idle set screw is on, I am guessing it is a decel valve that closes butterfly when coasting in gear. I never looked at a manual to figure out what controls the vacuum valve that is on the passenger side of the engine compartment, but if you disconect the vacuum line and plug it that lever will not back off and idle will remain where you set it with the adjustment screw.

Make sure the engine is warmed up and not on a fast idle cam before adjusting idle.

The car is a 5 speed, I not sure if automatic cars are the same.

The car idles fine now and still run's great and gets 37+ MPG with 240000 miles!

If you want to fix it properly you would have to diagnose why that dashpot is being actuated at idle

Hi djay,
the idle speed control can be adjusted on the pump by turning the adjusting screw that stops the accelerator lever.
