Did you use the same alternator? This is a two wire unit correct?

A V6 alternator might be setup with a larger pulley so it turns slower which might not turn fast enough using a V8 pulley setup.

Look here for a wiring setup you can try.

Good luck and be careful.

you didnt say if you've had the alternator tested or not, usually when the car dies after removing the positive cable, it is a sure sign of a bad alternator. i would start there

charge the battery then remove the negative cable place a test light between the battery and the negative cable if the light is bright you have a draw remove fuses one at a time til the light goes dim then thats the draw you might also need to unplug and remove the wires from the alternator to see if the diodes inside failed

I have 1988 camaro i-roc it had a v-6 in in it some one change it over to 350 can,t get it to charge can you help think sam

the alternator wiring is the same for both engines.make sure you have power on the large red wire at the alternator and the plug connector is clean and tight for the 2 wire plug for the should have a small wire from the battery wire to this 2 wire plug and the brown wire is generally used to put out the light on the dash when its there is a D shaped hole on the back of the alternator that you can insert a metal cotter pin into until you feel a tab and ground the tab with the cotter pin by touching the pin to the alternator case and the charging system should start to charge.use a volt meter to check the voltage.if it doesn`t charge when you do this or you don`t hear the charging system start to charge then the voltage regulator is not working and needs replacing.

84 CK TRK, 2500, 5.7L 55,000 miles have replaced alternator twice - battery still reads 12 volts. Trickle charge on battery OK and engine starts up OK - terminal 1 on alternator wire (brown) reads 2.4volts...

On some of the older style GM's you can take that brown wire and cut it and take the end leading from the alternator and hook it directly to the hot terminal on the alternator and just leave it hooked up and it will work. But I have ran into the occasional problem where leaving it hooked up will drain the battery when the vehicle isn't running. Hope this helps..

all you need is one wire to the pin marked i or L to come live with the key and it will charge.the alternator does'nt need anything but power from the charge light[L terminal] to function normalll.

Battery indecator light on on dash

Check to make sure that there's power from the alternator to the battery on the charge-back wire. If nothing's there, then your alternator is junk and you'll have to replace it again.
