Question about 1990 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

After the tailgate handle was jammed, we pulled it apart and repaired it as it was just stiff and full of dust. After this was completed the rear electric window will not go up anymore. There is an error beeping sound and we cant find anything obstructing the window. Any hints????

Recheck that you didn't knock the wire(s) off the power window motor and that it's back together properly. use light grease on the moving parts, not wd40 as that tends to wash off the grease and oil.

you may also want to change the relay that controls the power windows. it will be located under the dash in that fuse panel. i don't want to eliminate that it may just need to be reset. unplug the battery for about 15 minutes then hook it up again. if your stereo happens to be of the anti-theft variety and requires a code make sure you know it before you unhook the battery.

Your going to need a long needle nose pliers to reach the cable and pull it and it should release the tailgate

Tailgate handle became disconnected from the arms that look the gate

The arm that comes off the back of the handle is prone to snapping off ( experience on New Zealand models, Navara ) Access is from the inside plate immediately behind the handle , you will see handle bellcrank and rods running to latches either side.
Usually these break after things start getting bent in the tailgate making the latches stiff and overloading the mechanism.

My 2001 Chevrolet Sliverado Z71 Sportside TAILGATE will not unlatch. (It seems like the drivers side is, but the passenger side is not moving at all.)

There are two rods inside the tailgate. One for the driver's side latch and the other for the passenger's side latch. They are connected to the handle with "swing away" plastic connectors. If you lift the handle and look under it you should see the driver's side rod still hooked to your handle, and nothing on the passenger's side. If both rods are still connected to the handle, the repair is going to be much harder. Let's hope only one is connected. Unbolt the handle and pull it out far enough to disconnect the rod/rods, ( you might want to tie a string to it so it doesn't fall out of reach before you disconnect it ). Now grab both rods with needle nose pliers and pull them toward the center, if the passenger's side is still connected to the latch, this should open your tailgate. If the passengers side is not connected, try getting a long stiff wire with a hook on the end to activate the latch, it may take several tries, but just be patient and careful and persistent. If this doesn't work, hopefully someone else has a solution, about all I have left is cutting the strike bolt on the passenger's side, ( going to be very hard to do ), or breaking the tail light lens and trying to remove the strike bolt, ( last resort before destroying the tailgate ). I'm posting a picture of a typical swing away connector to help, they are color coded and this isn't the proper color, but it will give you an idea of what it looks like and how it attaches the rod to the handle. 6c6b2fa.jpg

it is probably the plastick clip on the tailgate rod.. it probably fell off... i had to take the tailgate apart and replace the clip on mine.. but if your lucky you can pull the cover off right by the handle,, look inside and fish the rod up and replace clip

Jeep Liberty 2005 Cannot shut tailgate window......

Hi all,

I had the same problem onmy dad's Jeep KJ (Cherokee/Liberty) so i went ahead and unbolted the tailgate handle;

First you need to take off the plastic inner tailgate cover (doh), then carefully pry away the the black liner and you'll see 2x 10mm hex nuts, unscrew both. Then on the latch outer side of the tailgate remove the upper 2 torx screws, then loosen one of the clamps of the connecting rod between latch and handle.
While pulling out on the handle (needed to clear the mechanism from the sheetmetal) you'll be able to carefully remove the complete doorhandle assembly.
There's still one wireloom attached to the handle, this is the culprit, It's the little actuator switch that's need liberal amounts of lubricant such as WD40 or similar.
I actually removed the switch and pushed it several times to full stroke after i lubricated it, then reconnected it and presto! The rear window unlocked every single time by means of the doorhandle instead of using the wireless remote...

Easy fix, done in half an hour. Saved you $ 300 on parts and labour

Good luck!

How do I replace tailgate handle

I just finished replacing mine. It took about an hour. Here's my step by step.
1. take off the two outside bolts on the inside of the tailgate behind the handle.
2. Now gently pull off the cladding around the latch. It is still held on by two christmas tree style holders.
3. Tie some long ropes to each of the two rods that the handle pulls together. You don't want them getting away from you.
4. Now free the rods from the plastic clamps. This is the point of no return. Mine would not go back together. A small screw driver shoved in from the end along the seam will pop them easily.
5. Now remove the remaining 3 T40 bolts on the back of the tailgate.
6. The handle assembly is now free to come out. Hold on to it as you lift the tailgate back up. Don't shut the tailgate all the way.
7. Work the old handle out. I did not take any of the cladding off. It took about five minutes of gentle manipulations to get it out. I did have to pull on the metal tongue that comes up right in front of it.
8. Pop the replacement plastic clamps into their corrent places in the new handle. Hinge side down. Don't fasten them.
9. Put the new handle in the same way you took the old one out.
10. Attach with the 3 T40 bolts. Dont fully tighten, just snug. I would recommend some blue loctite as well.
11. Now shut the tailgate so that it latches. Place the pull rods in the plastic clamps and fasten them. Don't pull on the rods, just put them in the clamps.
12. Your door should work now. Try it a couple of times. Pull on both sides of the tailgate to make sure each is held tight. If so, tighten up all the bolts, put the cladding on, and your done.
13. If your door won't latch, the rods are being pulled together too much. Undue the plastic clamps, push the rods apart and reset them in the clamps.

How to remove trim from rear hatch door on 2001 Sienna

You need to remove the big plastic or vinyl rear hatch trim to get the side trims off. Remove the 10 mm bolt that holds the pull handle (if you have a pull handle), and then, using a flat tool, (like a stiff putty knife), insert the tool between the vinyl trim and the tailgate to loosen the plastic clips (there is like 18 of them); one the hatch panel is off, you will see that you can now remove the side trims.

Back door wont open and window wont go down

The rear window has to be completely down in order to move the tailgate! You should be happy that your window is stuck up, unlike mine which is stuck all the way down! I have to completly take apart my tailgate!! If you want to try a trick to get the rear window down, my bronco has a rear window switch right next to the headlight knob, take the 2 purple wires on that window switch, and cross them, if your motor still works and if the wires are good, that should make the window go down!!! good luck, hope that helps!
