My 2001 f150 super crew won't shift from 2wd to 4h or 4l when i turn knob. any ideas

Best to check by jacking the truck up ( taking safety precautions, parking brake, chock the wheels, jack stands, etc ), turn the key to the run position and place into 4WD.
If the front drive shaft turns, the problem is in the transfer case.
If the front drive shaft does not turn, the problem is in the front axle.

I would suspect the front shaft does not turn, and the most common cause of this is the vacuum motor on the front axle, the vacuum lines to it, or the vacuum solenoids.
The vacuum shift motor is what locks the front wheels in, and without this action, the PM does not get the confirm that the truck is good to go, and illuminate the cluster indicators ( 4x4, and if 4L the Low Range lamps ).
There are 2 vacuum solenoids, one is 4WD one is 2WD ( to move the motor one way or the other ).
Start with checking for vac on the vacuum motor ( actually it is a diaphragm ). The pink line should have vacuum when in 4WD, the blue line should have vacuum when in 2WD. If not, time to work back towards the solenoids. Use a short length of hose on the vacuum solenoids, and retest.
If still missing vacuum on the 4WD solenoid, I would suspect it is bad, but best to test on the other side of it, to make sure the vacuum reservoir ( mounted behind the battery box ) is supplying vacuum to the solenoids.

This is just the most common cause, best to confirm with the 1st test above, to know if you should look to the trans case, or axle.

Ours was a 2001 F-150 that would not shift into 4wd. We could hear the transfercase engage but the front axle would not lock. I checked vacuum down at the front axle actuator and had vac on the pink in 2wd but no vac on the blue when switched to 4wd. A quick check at the two solenoids behind the battery and I found both solenoids "clicking" when switched and a good vacuum source to both. I then manually checked the solenoids for switching vac and they were indeed switching. This indicated a leak somewhere between the solenoids and the actuator. A quick visual inspection of the vac harness found a three port vac connector below the a/c lines in the inner fender liner, where the blue vac tubing was broken off. The pink also had a small hole and was failing as well. To repair it, I trimmed back the plastic lines(all three) and reinstalled the lines into the three way connector. Upon retesting the vac signal down at the axle, I now had vac but seemed to be pulsing every 5-7 seconds, which typically indicates the system still has a leak somewhere. Suspecting the three way connector where I had just made a repair, I eliminated the connector all together(the connection felt loose to begin with) and I now had a strong steady vac signal down at the actuator. Retested the system and it worked perfectly.

I had that same problem and the 4wd Actuator diaphragm that locks the front axles in will always go out when to much water or mud or any other kind of moisture get into it. I bought a manual actuator for about $200 and installed it myself, it only took about 20 minutes to install and now i'll never have to worry about the front end not locking in ever again. This is the route i would recommend you to take.

Transfer Case - Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Features A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4H, and 4L modes of 4x4 operation.
The generic electronic module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system.
The output shaft speed (OSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.
The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electronic shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case (go to Table 4).
The transmission range sensor is located on the LH side of the transmission; this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.
The electronic shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4H, and 4L positions.
The 4x4/4x2 vacuum solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.
The 4x4 shift motor relay is a module containing two relays. Under the control of the GEM, the 4x4 shift motor relay shifts the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4H, and 4L modes.
The transfer case clutch relay is an electromechanical relay used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

How do I turn 4wd on?


    • 1 Start your Dodge truck's engine.
    • 2 Turn the electronic transfer case from "2WD" to "4WD Lock" to engage the high range 4WD, if the dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" to "4H." The electronic transfer case is located on the instrument panel and is marked with "2WD," "4WD Lock" and 4WD Low." The lever-equipped transfer case is located to the right of your leg and is marked with "2H," "4H" and "4L."
    • 3 Shift the transmission into "Neutral" while the vehicle is either stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph to begin engaging in the low range 4WD. Turn the electronic transfer case to "4WD Low," if the Dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" or "4H" to "4L."
    Tips & Warnings
    • Indicator lights will come on and alert you that your vehicle is in either the high or low range of 4WD.

My 98 f150 was in 4WD Hi this morning when I started it. Selector switch is in 2WD position. 4WD Hi light is on, hubs (or front differential) is engaged and transfer case engage. (Feel front wheel hop...


If the switch was in the 2WD position and the transfer case was locked in a 4WD range, my 2 SWAGs would be bad switch or the connector to the shift motor is damaged / corroded or the fuse to the transfer case shift relay module is blown ( fuse # 17 ) / problem with the transfer case shift relay module.

This is without knowing if the truck was used in 4WD the night prior, and shifted out just before turning off. If this is the case, the shift motor might be stuck, and a few hits with a dead blow hammer to the transfer case might jar it free again ( do not use a metal hammer, it could damage the transfer case ).

The vacuum shift solenoids on the firewall are controlled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) which is grounding either the 2WD or 4WD solenoid, depending on the shift plate contacts in the transfer case. ( when in 4 or 4H, the contact switch plate signals the GEM, which in turn grounds the correct solenoid ).

Pulling the switch will not cause the transfer case to go back to a default position, the switch has a resistance level for each mode, and needs that value to operate the shift motor.

The resistance values for the switch between the 2 dark blue wires:
2WD - 4100 to 3700 ohms
4H - 1050 to 1150 ohms
4L - 380 to 340 ohms
- find the wire locations on the switch, mark them and remove the connector to test the resistance.

Just my opinion on the order :

1. Check the fuses for the shift motor
2. Try the old school shift method, back up ~ 50' put into park or neutral, and shift from 4WD to 2WD.
2.1. This is to see if the transfer case shift motor is bound up, and reversing might release it
3. Try hammering the transfer case with a dead blow hammer while someone shifts from 2WD to 4WD. You only need the key in the run position, if it happens quick enough after running the engine, the vacuum reservoir will still have enough vac to operate the solenoids. Don't chance running yourself over.
3.1. If this frees up the shift motor and the vacuum has bled off, you can try starting the truck and shifting into 4H then back to 2WD to get the front axle to disconnect or manually vacuum operate the front disconnect motor by applying vacuum to the pink vacuum line on the shift motor on the front axle.

HOW TO SHIFT TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE


Hi - Here is instruction how to do.

From N to 4H

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H".

From 4H to 4H LOCK

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

Position the front wheels straight ahead

and turn the switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

If the vehicle is moving, we recommend

that the speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph) during this operation.

NOTE:

• When shifting between the transfer

switch position and the transfer gear

position is unmatched, all 4WD indicators

will blink and the buzzer will sound.

• If it is difficult to shift between "4H" and

"4H LOCK" while the vehicle is moving,

try accelerating and decelerating your

vehicle several times after turning the

transfer switch. Be sure to wait until traffic

conditions allow you to accelerate and

decelerate safety before using this procedure.

From 4H LOCK to 4L LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4L LOCK".

From 4L LOCK to 4H LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

From 4H LOCK to 4H

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

• Be sure to stop the vehicle completely

before operating the transfer

switch to shift between "N" and

LOCK" unless the front wheels are

in the straight-ahead position and

KinlogworksI have A 2003 F-150 Super Crew. I have only used th4 wheel drive a few dozen times. about a mounth ago i switched it into 4 high and nothing happened. problem also in 4 low. any advise?


Operationally vacuum shifts the front axle between 2WD and 4WD mode. The GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) applies ground to the solenoid needed for the mode selected on the switch ( for ESOF ) or when the transfer case shift lever is moved ( MSOF ). The contact plates in the transfer case signal the GEM that the transfer case is engaged, and the Vacuum solenoids need to be activated ( either 2WD to 4WD or 4WD to 2WD ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
•With the truck running ( with front wheel back on the ground ), switch from 2WD to 4WD and back again, the vacuum shift motor should move the lever on the front axle.

-- If the vacuum shift motor does not move:
•Check for vacuum on the lines while shifting between modes. Pink vacuum line is 2WD mode, Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD.
•Check the fuses for the 4WD system and the solenoids.
•Check the vacuum lines from the vacuum shift motor to the solenoids on the firewall.
•Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids to the vacuum reservoir box behind the battery.
•Check the vacuum reservoir box for cracks.
•Typical solution is the vacuum lines ( to the solenoids or to the vacuum shift motor ) are cracked or the vacuum shift motor has a cracked diaphragm and has water in it.
•Could be the shift plate contacts in the transfer case are corroded / not making good contact, and not activating the solenoids.

- If the front drive shaft turns:
•For ESOF system
-- Check the fuses for the transfer case, engine compartment fuse panel, 17 & Cab fuse panel fuses 13 and 23 ( verify with owners manual, 97-97 & 99-03 MY can be slightly different on some items ).
-- Try hitting the transfer case with a dead blow hammer ( do not use a metal hammer, it can damage the transfer case ) to see if the transfer case shift motor is hung up .
-- Check the transfer case connector, to make sure the connector pins are clean and making good contact.
•For MSOF systems
-- Check that the shift linkage on the transfer case is moving when the lever is moved from 2W to 4H and 4L.

There should be a lever shifter on the floor board with 2h- 4h-4L on the knob. Pull or push the lever to 4H then get out and go to the front axle. In the middle of the front tires there should be a locking front hub assembly, turn the selector to lock, do this on both wheels, your truck should now be in 4 wheel drive. To put it in 4L you need to havt the transmission in nuetral before you shift the lever. Once done playing make sure you unlock your front axel(hubs) and place the lever in 2H.

I just bought a 2001 blazer 4.3 4wd and it was stuck in 4 low


It should tell you on the Shifter whether or not that you can Shift on the Fly. Check the Manual first if there is one in the Truck. Some Models had this and some Did not. Was an Extra from Factory Option.
