Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva

My heater on 1998 Achieva is still blowing cold air after 3 thermostats and 3 different mechanics. Help! I'm going broke!

Ok, I have been in your situation. Locate the Coolant line from the radiator to the firewall, there are actually 2. One has a valve type device on it. Remove that device and replace it with a piece of straight pipe. Locate your AC compressor. Disconnect the Wires to the Compressor so it can not activate when you select defrost. During the Winter you want the heat and should not need the AC side or your system anyway. This should fix you up for the rest of the winter, in the spring re-install the valve and reconnect the AC. Also, make sure you plug any vacum lines taht are connected to that valve on teh radiator line.

If both heater hoses are hot, then coolant is coming and going into/out of the heater core. The only thing that would affect heat would be a blend door not operating correctly. You will have to check the proper door that controls hot/cold air.

Why does the heater blow hot air when I drive after its been idling for 15min and not during the idle when it reaches the 100 Temp?...(it blows cold air in idle)


Firstly, a thermostat that opens quicker will not give you better heat. Your heater core may be partially plugged causing a low flow issue. Another area to check would be the water pump impeller for corrosion or slipping on the shaft. Does the vehicle's cooling system operate well otherwise?

My 2001 pontiac montana is over heating one min.. and fine the next when it starts over heating the heater will blow cool air instead of hot and the resavor where the coolant goes will fill up and bubble...


it could be two things...
a heater hose has worn out or got cut in someway or the heater core is bad and needs to be replaced...that could also cause you to smell some antifreeze in the car
and the over heating problem should be that there is still some air in the system after your mechanic changed the thermostat...so some air bubbles might be in the thermostat and then it gets over heated...when the air bubbles get out of the thermostat then the car stops over heating...
so let your mechanic remove all the air from the system in order for the car to run perfect...
it shouldn't be harmful to your wife and kids...but you should try to fix the problem asap :)

No heat air is blowing cold


First you have to identify what causes the problem.
To do this you have to:
1) When engine is cold check the level of coolant. If it is low fill it up.
2) Start engine and check if engine reaches regular temperature. If your engine is not heated enough it means your thermostat does not work properly and should be replaced.
3) If engine temperature is normal, then check the temperature of pipes that go to/from heater core. These pipes are located up the fire wall (easier access is from the passenger side). If pipe/pipes are cold (even engine is worm) it means you heater core is plugged and should be flushed. Keep in mind, flushing the whole cooling system is different from flushing heater core.
4) If pipe/pipes are hot/warm, turn off the fan, switch controller to the hot position, wait for 3-4 minutes and turn on the fan. Note if the cold air blows first or warm air blows first but it cools down in 5-10 seconds. If the air blows cold than it is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator.
5) If air blows warm first and then cools down, then while running engine and remaining the transmission in PARKING position, press on the gas pedal until your engine reaches 3,000 RPM. Check if your heater blows warm/hot air. If it does, then your water pump does not work properly and should be replaced. If the air still cold, I would suggest to flush the heater core.

It is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator. But just in case I would suggest to follow the entire procedure:

1998 Ford Explorer only blows cold air no heat at all


ok, i had the same issue, your thermostat is stuck open, or you need to check cooling system and the color of coolant, maybe try a flush, go to parts store and get some acid cleaner for flushing your cooling system.....good luck!
