Leak in the air ride suspension

Would like to know what the air ride system entails have a leak i think in the line once jacked up is it ok to turn air ride back on

I think that if you lift by the pumpkin and put your jack stands under the axle tubes you should be fine.It's when you lift and suspend by the body you can over extend those air shocks.

I have a 2006 lincoln navgator why in the front does it keep going down

The Navigator has an air ride (air bag) suspension system. It uses a compressor and air bags in the suspension to provide a smooth and level ride. These systems are fairly reliable, but can malfunction due to misuse or parts failure. A common problem with these is that you must turn off the air ride system before raising the vehicle on jacks or a lift. This is because the weight of the vehicle provides a feedback pressure to the compressor to allow it to determine proper level and shutoff point. If the vehicle's weight is removed from the suspension with the air ride on, the compressor can over-inflate the air bags and cause them to blow out and fail. Other things that can happen are leaking air hoses, o-rings, seals and such.

Check suspension

Something in your air ride system is not functioning properly. Could be one of the air bags (for you suspension not accident bags), air pump leak, line leak, condensation in your air lines, drier....etc. Not a hard thing to track but it will take time and a layout of your air suspension system.

1997 Expedition rear suspension keeps trying to air up after its been turned off for 20min even without the key in the ignition how can I stop this from happening?

Hello, You need to find the leak in the Air-ride system. Your vehicle is trying to maintian its height and is made to cycle like it is doing. You can shut-off the system, usually from a switch located on the drivers' side rear cargo area behind a plastic access panel. DO NOT DRIVE the vehicle with the Air-ride shut off. I am only telling you about this switch to keep the battery from running down and causing starting problems, if the condition worsens.

If you are trying to fix this yourself, you can use a spray bottle and make a soapy solution to put in it. Then spray the suspension bags and air lines and look for bubbles. Then fix the leaking part.

There is a Diagnostic plug for the Air-ride system. It takes a scanner with the correct programming to read this special system. Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys give free scans, but you should call ahead to ask if they have the correct scanner to read your Air-ride. The Diagnostic plug is useful but may not find all faults unless they are within the switches.

Be careful with the air pressure if you are attempting to remove any line or bag sensor because it has High pressure unless bled down. The vehicle body can shift on jacks if the Air-ride is not shut off when working under the vehicle.

There are some aftermarket firms which repair the bags and some Spring shops which remove the Factory system and put in regular springs. I hope you find my solution very helpful.

Rear air suspension problem on a 95 deville. i hear the compressor go on yet once the car is drive a service suspension light comes on

In my opinion the air ride suspension is one of automobile's biggest mistakes. I see this a lot.

The first thing you must do is isolate the problem.

Jack up the back of the car and remove the rear wheels.

Now your shocks are visible. Inspect the rubber boots in the midsection of the shock, If this is worn or torn they will need to be replaced as they dry out once the integrity of the boot is jeopardized.

Next turn the key forward to turn in the compressor that you hear. And follow the thin black air lines that run into the side of the shock. A lot of times, especially on a vehicle this age, these lines will at some point rub on the frame or other item and have holes. Just listening for air leaks and running your fingers along the lines (feeling for bumps or holes) will give you a quick answer on this.

The only thing left in the system is the compressor itself, just remove the air lines from the shocks and as the compressor runs feel the end for air pressure. If you feel it the compressor is working.

Once you have isolated the issue your vehicle faces, feel free to come back and ask for assistance in replacing them. Be thourough and check everything though because 1 bad element will make future problems inevitable.

How do I release the pressure from the rear airbags

there is a switch in the rear to turn air ride off whe vehicle is jacked up there isnt an enormous amount of pressure so when you undo the air lines you will be ok just make sure air ride switch is in off position

Forgot toi turn the air suspension off when

Remove battery, remove windshield washer bottle, remove air compressor and disconnect both air lines from the compressor dryer. Make sure compressor electrical wiring is plugged in, install battery, turn suspension switch to ON, turn ignition switch to the ON position, close all door and the compressor should come on and completely lower the whole truck. Once the truck is completely down, turn the ignition OFF, remove battery and connect both air lines. Install battery ensure electrical wiring is plugged in, turn ignition switch to ON, the compressor should come on and raise the vehicle to the correct ride height.

Where are the leveling sensors located on a 2003 Navigator?

There is one at each wheel. here is some info

    Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  1. Connect scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  1. Select Air Suspension Control Module under Active Command Mode:
    • VENT FRNT to deflate the front down.
    • LIFT FRNT to inflate the front up.
    • VENT REAR to deflate the rear down.
    • LIFT REAR to inflate the rear up.
Ride Height Resetting
  1. NOTE: Make sure that the air suspension switch is in the ON position
    NOTE: Make sure that a battery voltage of at least 11 volts is maintained while carrying out this procedure.
    Turn the ignition to the ON position.
    • Exit the vehicle, close all doors and allow the system to vent the vehicle down to kneel height (approximately 45 seconds).
  1. With the ignition remaining in the ON position, shift the vehicle into DRIVE and then back to PARK.
    • Exit the vehicle, close all doors and allow the vehicle to pump to trim (approximately 45 seconds).
  1. Measure the ride height. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00 .
  1. Open the LF door.
  1. Connect scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  1. While outside of the vehicle, select the proper vehicle year, model and engine type.
  1. Select 4WAS module.

No air reaching air bags/compressor does not come on when car turned on

This is a very common problem with all Lincolns. The air ride suspension are marketed as a luxury-comfort item but most do not know that they have a 100% failure rate and are designed to fail as shortly after the warranty expires as possible. The air bags that support the weight of the vehicle are not designed to withstand temperatures below 40 degrees or above 94 degrees and are very prone to dry rot. Once the bags start getting tiny cracks and leaks they start overworking the compressor. (Picture trying to blow up a balloon with holes in it.. you will try for as long as you can but will ultimately have to give up) These air ride systems can be very difficult to accurately diagnose the first time and consequently very expensive. Most people seem to be converting to a passive suspension system these days as the ride quality is too similiar to notice a difference and the reliability is paramount. offers a high quality conversion kit that utilizes powder coated American steel coil springs that are actually designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. there is a direct link to the Lincoln page.
