I have an OBDII code reader, but when I connect it to my truck, it does not want to link to the vehicle. The screen keeps saying CAN OBDII waiting for vehicle to respond and it never does. Do I need something else to read the codes?

Take the car to an AutoZone or Oreilly's and have the codes read. WRITE THEM DOWN! THen report back here what they are. We can better help you then.

You need to turn the ignition key to "On" for the code reader to read the codes from the vehicle. In most states, if the plug didn't work, you would not be bale to get the vehicle inspected.

Have the DTC read and take it from there. But i bet you have a cylinder misfiring. Once you get the DTC read it will lead you to the problem and you can tackle the job from there. It usually is a pretty easy fix.

Once you plug your code reader in make sure the key is in the run position, engine off. If that doesnt work then i would take it to Autozone or Oreilly's and have them try to read the codes, just to rule out your code reader being faulty or not. Once you have done this report back and let us help you from there.

Check engine light is on, any speed above 30mph it gives a flashing check engine light, acceleration feels bogged down, engine idle is rough and shakes the truck

I'm guessing you have over 100000 miles , definitely replace all the spark plugs and ignition cables and cap and rotor if your motor is such equipped. If you want a better idea of which cylinders are misfiring, go to your local Checker or Autozone and ask them for code retrieval, codes stored will give you an idea of what is failing. Code po300 is multiple misfire, po301 is cyl #1, po302 is cyl #2 and so forth.

5.3 liter Chevy engine #1 Cylinder not firing at idle

My opinion...

Year? Miles?

There's no way I'd dive into a "HEAD GASKET"
diagnosis without pressure testing the cooling
system and (wet/dry) COMPRESSION testing
the whole engine...

Even if it is a "HEAD GASKET"... the entire engine
might be ready for a REFRESH... and tossing a new
Head gasket into a TIRED ENGINE not insubstantial
(a lot of wasted time & money)...

Come back with some compression numbers...

but don't bother with any of this if your engine oil has water in it.

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

Engine runs rough after about ten minutes /idles really low

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.
