Which O2 sensor? If you have two, the first one from the engine regulates the computer for rich or lean, and the second, after the cat, determines if the catalitic converter is cleaning up unburned fuel.

You need to take it to someone who knows what's up . Can have a problem that sets a o2 sensor code an be something else ! Need to put on a scan tool an see if O2 sensor is rich or lean ! What code did it set ? Did your mechanic check fuel trims ? Could have vacuum leak , leaking fuel injector . You never go by just the codes , usually they point you in a direction to test ! I took my 2000 pontiac montana to auto zone on saturday and they ran there little test on it cause the light was on it came up with both o2 sencers were bad but i have changed the back one twice last month...

When you had one go bad, it fixed the problem for a short while. Now both they say are bad. 02 sensors last a long time if the engine has regular maintenance. Most likely your catalytic converter is bad. This will cause, at first the rear 02 to show bad readings setting a code. And as the converter progresses to get worse, it will make both 02 sensors give bad readings, thus setting off the codes.

I have hadtrouble with my management light coming on. I have had this checked with a competant garage and they have assured with it is not the cat. This went off on its own for about ten days but has now...

Hello, I would go to Autozone or Oreillys and ask them to scan it too. They do it free and they may use different scanners than where you went. When they find a Code you can come back here with the Code number. The "Check Engine" light system is not perfect and some defects will show the same Code and must be weeded out from several parts that give the same error.

By taking your car to a different place, they may have sold parts to someone with the identical problem and solved it. They (Autozone, Oreillys, etc.) also sell to the Repair shops, so there is talk about what they are ordering and often why. I have myself gone to a Ford parts counterperson and ask what their Mechanics are installing to fix a problem with more than 1 cure.

The Catalytic converter was what you referred to. The last O2 sensor after the cat is what evaluates the efficiency of that part. Bad gas can foul it, an intermittent miss will cause the "check" light to blink, but the first O2 sensor before the cat should show a rich condition. Now you have a conflict. The first O2 sensor is less sensitive than the second O2 sensor. The first O2 sensor should not have missed a problem.

A Mechanic will need to test the operating range of both O2 sensors. I hope my solution is helpful to you. Get your scan done at one of the Auto parts stores and perhaps buy a product for cleaning a Catalytic converter. You just add the product to the gas tank. Change gas stations and if you do city driving, get on an expressway for 20 minutes.

Couple of notes - poor grade of fuel or additives can be coating O2 sensors. Next, when changing sensors are you disconnecting battery? If not a power surge can damage sensor and lastly check wiring harness and make sure wires are all clean and not scared along the way - could be shorting out.

Do you know how a O2 sensor works ? Do you know what fuel trims are ? short an long term fuel trims . Do you know how to test a O2 sensor . If the light comes back on it's not the O2 sensor . And if it's only on one bank it's not fuel pressure problem . How does the vehicle run , at idle an cruise ? Any other codes ? Could be a fuel injector problem , vacuum leak intake manifold .

Previa 2001 i change the oil (5w30 with aditiv )cooling liquid ,filtrs, sparks, service for 145000km the engine is running very well gas test ok but after 1000km a light on board show failure engine ....

Hi, this is very normal the chances are your O2 sensors where ok and it was just the cat causing the problem, if the cat is giving the wrong gasses out then this will cause the O2 sensor to seem as if they are faulty, so the warning you get is bad O2 sensors but the fault may well have just been the cat, get the cat changed and you should find you will have no further problems.
Plus as you have changed the sensors then this would rule out them causing you problems in the near future.

once the cat has been sorted the sensors will pick up the correct mixture from the cat and this will then stop the warning lights coming on and it will also make your car run a lot smoother and use less fuel

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

Oxygen sensor replacement

It's something you can with simple tools, you have four O2 sensors. Your going to have to get the truck rescanned or if you have the DTC code, you can find out which O2 sensor has gone bad so you can replace it. Your going to have Two upstream O2 sensors on each exhaust bank, one O2 sensor before the Catalytic Converter, and the last one after the Catalytic Converter. Its like replacing a Spark plug and you can pick up the O2 sensor at any large Auto Parts store with a can of WD 40. Just unclip the wire leads to the O2 sensor and then with a O2 sensor socket or hint close end wrench and hammer, you can remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. Good luck and be safe.
