SOURCE: Transmisssion in a 1996 ford tarus

The AX4S equiped was never known for its reliabilty, I'm guessing you have around 120,000 miles on it?
The main problem areas with that transaxle was shift valves, and torque converters. Not cheap either, a Ford Factory Remanufactured transaxle will run $2,000, and almost another $1,000 for labor, but a good one can be had for less, but remember, new doesn't mean good, and good doesn't mean new.

SOURCE: transmission problem

if the battery has been installed wrong you will need to get it to a trusted technician who will probably make the determination that that one or more of the vehicles computers has been damaged and will need to be replaced. it is critical now days to make sure the polarity is correct and they are not very forgiving when you make a simple mistake.

I HAVE A 1996 FORD TARUS GL READING CODES P1785 AND P1784

The two codes are for a mechanical failure in the transmission for first second and reverse.
I would say you will need someone to pull the pan and take a look inside to find out what happened.
