Question about 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

1 Answer

I have a 1988 Cavalier Z-24 with a 2.8 engine. It has turbo port fuel injection (whatever that is), I assume it?s electronic fuel injection. The car was purchased new in 1988 and currently has about 48,000 mile in it. The car sat not used for about 2 years. I replaced the fuel and brake lines as the originals rotted out while the car was sitting. I replace the O2 sensor, spark plugs and the air filter is new. I sprayed an intake carbon cleaner into the air intake and have used a bottle of fuel injection cleaner in the fuel tank about 2 tanks ago. There has been a marked improvement since I did the above, but the thing smells like it?s running rich. At cruise under slight gas pedal pressure the engine feels like its surging. Under load with pressure on the gas pedal it runs great. Gas mileage is only about 15MPG. It used to be better. Is there some way of leaning out the fuel mixture? The oxygen sensor I installed was an after market unit that cost about $15. The GM dealer wanted $80 for a GM part. Is there a difference in O2 sensors? Could this be the problem? I had a similar problem with a 1990 Sunbird my son had some time ago. It turned out the catalytic converter had deteriorated and the insides were intermittently blocking the exhaust opening, so we just cleaned out the converter and it ran fine. I tried the same thing with this car, but it was just a waste of time (and a good converter). It runs the same now, only noisier. Any help would be appreciated!

Clean the Air Idle control (IAC) valve in the throttle body, MAF sensor, and EGR valve. Also check or replace the fuel pressure regulator at the fuel injector rails, make sure all the vacuum hoses are good and replace any damaged hoses. NO check engine light is a good thing but here is a link for you to check the car for any DTC codes. Good luck and keep up the good work and keep the car running.

My Chevy 2500 p/u will only start and run when I pour gas in the carb...if I kill it for 2 minutes , I have to do it again to get it started ...uhg..frustrating !!! One guy told me it was a spider sumthing...

Lets start with terminology. I am assuming the truck is newer than 1987 so you would have fuel injection. No carb.
If it is a vortec engine, either a 4.3 or larger, and built after 1993, it could have central port fuel injection. That style uses one injector and a spider of lines that go to each intake port. This is inside the upper intake manifold.
Vortec engines require more fuel pressure than engines with port fuel injection or throttle body injection. So the first thing you need to do is check base fuel pressure before and after you crank the engine. You'll need a pressure gauge to do it. Normal fuel pressure at idle for a port injected engine is 35psi and 60psi for a central pfi system.

Just bought the 1988 Toyota pickup and don't know what size engine in it. I need to change the oil and need to know what type.

If it's a 4 cylinder it's a 2.4 liter. If it's a 6 cylinder it's a 3.0 liter. The 2.4 liter engine comes with a carb, Fuel injection or even a turbo. Either way the 2.4 and the 3.0 take the same oil filter. The bosch is # 3330. I hope this helped and good luck.

96 chevy cavalier engine hesitates on hills when giving it the gas replaced fuel filter 2.3 l electronic fuel injection

hesitation under excell can be spark related. check your spark plugs. they may be worn, with exsessive gap.
I always recomend AC delco plugs for GM engines. stay away from Bosch plugs.
Another thing to consider is fuel quality.
Try a different brand.
I have had lots of problems with Arco fuel.

Chilton shows 2.2, 2.5, and 2.6 motors for that year Shadow so Im guessing a 2.2 will work but might lack the power you were used to. Best of luck.
