There's a weep hole in the pump casting, if the bearing fails or is starting to fail, it will take the seal out. Then it will leak coolant out of that hole. Sometimes you can hear the bearing rattling, with engine off and keys in your pocket, grab the fan blade and try wiggle it from side to side. If there is movement the pump is most likely shot, you may have to take the belt off to get a better feel. Check the fan clutch too if that is getting bad it can create a vibration and cause the pump to fail.

If it is leaking from the water pump area it could be the pump has a leak, in which case I would change the pump; however, it may just be the lower rad hose that has sprung a leak. It may just need tightening. Check this first , then have someone pressure test the radiator to ascertain the problem. Good luck!

Water pump gasket most likely. or you did not ge the hose tight enough. Failing to get the pump gasket sealed is common.

My coolant is rapidly disappearing, and I have no clue why?

IF YOU GOT TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM AND DONT HAVE 50 / 50 MIXTURE OF ANTIFREEZE AND WATER. WATER WILL EVAPORATE BOIL AWAY.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS LOOK AT TOP AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSES LEAKS, CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND BOTH RADIATOR CONTAINER AND RADIATOR CORES LEAKING. CHECK WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE. IF LEAKING WATER NEED REPLACING, CHECK ENGINE CRANKCASE ANTIFREEZE WILL LEAK IN CRANK CASE OR LEAK IN THE INTAKE GASKET COOLANT WILL BURN WITH FUEL.MANY THINGS WILL CAUSE COOLANT LOST.

I have 2001 alero. Yesterday the coolant light came on and the engine just died. Any ideas maybe fuel pump or timing belt or could it be the water pump

IF LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON ENGINE SHUT OFF BECAUSE IT GOT TOO HOT AND OVER HEATED.WHEN YOU HAVE LOW COOLANT.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES AND WATER PUMP. ADD MORE COOLANT IN CAR RADIATOR UNTIL YOU AT FULL COLD MARK ON THE OVER FLOW COOLANT TANK START THE CAR LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE.RAISE YOUR HOOD LOOK FOR LEAKS THE RADIATOR PRESSURE WILL PUSH COOLANT OUT WHERE LEAKS COULD BE.LOOK AROUND RADIATOR AND COOLANT HOSES.LOOK AT WATER PUMP.IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING AT WATER PUMP REPLACE IT.

My 91 jeep wrangler has a good steady flow from the water pump and the other day the pipe that goes to the bottom radiator to the pump shot off and leaked out coolant everywere is it the pump it always...

If the pump isn't leaking or noisy, it's good. If the hose came off and the engine overheated you may have blown a head gasket (radiator hydrocarbon test is best to determine that) if you see steam from the tailpipe, coolant in the engine oil or oil in the coolant that also is a big clue.
Jeep engines tend to rust internally. the rust packs into the bottom of radiator core, especially after an overheat. Therefore, don't trust that because the radiator looks good that it is good you cannot see what's actually inside it. (you could try back-flushing but should do that with the radiator removed to do it right). If you see any improvement after flushing, replacement would be a good idea.(unless it completely works). You can use plain water in the cooling system while testing. Just don't leave the water overnight so it can freeze.

My defrost fan only works on 5 and shuts off. not defrosting. Also I have to continue to put anitfreeze in car... Temp gage goes to highest level

The fan problem could be a bad blower motor resister. As for the coolant leak it could be a number of things, hose, water pump, radiator or even heater core. Try to take a look under the hood to see if you see any leaks.

How can i tell if my water pump is bad?

most of the time when a pump goes bad in starts to leak after you shut off the engine. May not be much and it may or may not leak enough to see it on the ground. Look around the water pump and see if you can see any wet spots and look at the water pump it self and it has weep holes one on the bottom and top see if you see any leakage from there if so the pump is bad

I gave you the wrong pump it was the water pump that was changed

There is a shaft seal in automotive water pumps that can fail.
You will know if it's that seal because water will be dripping from the bottom of the water pump.
If the water is not near the water pump, then look for a freeze plug that is leaking.
