The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank. If the hose is still blocked, trace it back until you find the blockage.
Make sure you refill the system with a good quality LONG LIFE coolant, Dexcool was the original coolant used in the Northstar engine but there are others to choose from now, Just make sure it's the long life silicate free coolant which is designed to last 5 years or 100,000+ miles.

Car overheated but not showing on heat gauge, replaced camshaft sensor, cleared faults with laptop, still not starting

There is an engine thermostat in every car`s cooling systems . The thermostat may have failed in the closed position stopping the coolant from circulating and resulting in an overheated engine .
The thermostat is priced at roughly $10.00 at any automotive parts store . Find a friend or neighbor to help you locate the one on your car and start there with checking this item . It is a very common cause of engine overheating. Don`t forget to get a new gasket too for the thermostat housing . Good luck ! !

Engine over heats

Check for collapsed radiator hose first.

Do the cooling fans come on? If not, check fuse, relay and if still no function- fan thermostat switch.

If fans do come on, replace water pump.

03 malibu overheating and heater blows cold air

its obviously thermostat

most of the cars made for Europe are equipped with a( thermostat ) but don`t confuse it with air conditioner thermostat or thing is working like valve that stops water circulating in cold starts so the water will only circulate around the engine block not through the radiator and of coarse it helps heat up your car`s engine faster but the problem comes when that valve got old (by the way most of those valves working as a wax capsule when the water heats to some amount the wax molten so it opens the way for water to circulate through the radiator ) what happens is simply the wax looses some of its function and molten in higher temp . so it block the water again until it heats up to molt the wax my advice : get off that part and just don`t replace it if you found it pricey for you your car still working but will needs more time to warm up i hope i was useful for u sir .

l could suggest you to check your engine thermostat if is working. if it is found defective, replace. some say, yes, could be the head gasket. it causes also of overheating. but smoke you notice at the tail end, could be you have broken valve seal and eats up the oil. this another problem makes the engine's overheating. the 25 old old engine really need an overhaul.

It sounds like they didn't get the cooling system filled completely, there's an air bubble. I had a problem with a 2000 Oldsmobile overheating, it turned out to be the aftermarket thermostat. I bought a stat from GM the problem went away.

Bublling in the thermostat housing and very hot upper radiator hose

I recommend flushing the radiator thoroughly if not done recently. there seems to be some sort of blockage in the radiator at this time. if you get lots of metal fragments that are flushed out during this flush, i will then recommend a rebuild on the radiator or replacement of the radiator. make sure the cooling fans are cycling on time as well.
