Hard to shift, clutch recently replaced, would oiling the shifter linkage elimante and if yes how do i access?

Check to see if it cable operated Clutch or rod operated.you may need to bleed Slave cylinder.And no greasing it wont help,especially since it wasnt a problem before I assume.

My car wont shift out of 2nd gear.the shifting handle is sloppy and the clutch is working fine


if the clutch really is working, (lever at bell moves 3/4")
by fine, my guess, is you can take off from dead stop in2nd, right>?
then its a bad shifter. tip.
or linkage (end tranny extension housing)
or transmission actual core.(shift rails, or forks) or worse.
you do know ,that you can disconnect the linkage and test tranny.
by hand,
key off
leakage off
shift to neutral (read the FSM or alldata.com) for how. under M/T sections.
then key on start engine,clutch depressed, the lift pedel
car moves its stuck in 2nd, of not bad linkage.
can do all gears that way, use 2 people and do not stand infront of car doing test.
or put the front wheels up on stands. but do not get near them.
while engine is running.
btw some shifters have plastic parts that go bad in the shifter tip.

jack up car in front, can you now shift car in to neutral or any gear?
linkage tests.
remove shifter housing and below see the shifter, H pattern
sifter box mechanism.
see that. you can shift that by hand with any small wrench or
large screwdriver, if the works the parts on the end of the shifter
handle main shaft tip are bad.

Shifter feels loose. hard to get reverse, whats the cause?


Possibly the following: Cable needs adjustment, linkage worn or needs lubricant, internal damage. I would start by removing the console panel from inside the vehicle and the boot from the shifter. Try lubricating what you can see from the top side. Don't use WD 40 use a grease that is similar to the type used to stop brake squeal. Work the shifter through all gears with the engine off and see if it eases the situation. If it does not, you'll need to raise the front of the vehicle in order to check/adjust the clutch cable and/or linkage that attaches to side of transmission. Another possibility is low transaxle oil. This should be easy to check as most cars now have a fill hole and a drain hole. Remove the top "screw" (this is usually done with a 3/8 " drive ratchet with NO socket on the end). Stick your finger in and the oil should be even with the top of the hole but not leaking out. If yours has a dipstick, all the better. Unless you are experincing chatter, or any grinding while shifting, it is very likely an external issue with linkage/clutch cable as it attaches to linkage, needing adjustment or lubrication. Check your owner's manual for the correct transaxle oil and freuqency of changing it. Regardless of any other rrelated issues, this is a very important maintenance procedure most people overlook. Your 99 is getting "up there" and it is imperative to follow schedules on oil changes, PCV valve, etc, ec, etc. I am hoping a few adjustments and some lube will fix you right up! If you do raise the car, manually and visually inspect all external parts of the shift linkage, fasteners and bushings and the cable itself for any rust or fraying.....

you need a new clutch kit and make sure gear oil in level may need refresh and inspect and grease shifter linkage for smother shifting you can update with 42 dizayn's linkage kit for vw it is works great.

hi. is this a manul shift trans?? if yes, then it is an easy fix. really it is. remove shifter knob and boot to gain access to the shifter assembly, you should be looking at the top of the transmission, remove 3 to 4 bolts holding the shifter in. slowly lift the shifter out of the trans, there should be a plastic "bushing" between the shfter and the shifting rod, its probably destoryed thats why reverse is hard to get, it adds more "throw" moving the shift rod of the trans more forward and firmly into gear.

Hard time getting car in gear


Sounds like your clutch may be in need of a replacement. If you cut the engine off does it go into gear easily? Then it's not the linkage.

After starting the car and pressing on the clutch, my shifter wont go into any gears, i go to put it in first and the shifter itself wont go in, what could cause this


If the shifter feels loose, the shifter linkage / damper to the gearbox became disconnected, or broken. These parts are serviceable, and should be replaced when shifting ceases to be accurate, and gears are hard to find. If the shifter feels normal, then the clutch is out of adjustment and not disengaging completely, or there is a failure of some sort inside the gearbox.

Check the clutch free play on the slave cylinder, the pushrod might be too short to depress the clutch fully. Did you make sure the master cylinder releases all the way?

My 98 Escort ZX2 manual transmisson seems to shift gear hard!


Clutch may be smooth but this is a sign of the clutch needing replaced. Some of these models have a linkage adjustment under the hood. Others are hydrallic and need fluid. Look under the hood where the steering is and see which you have and address accordingly. Good luck. Check on costs of clutch replacement.
