You will have to have some 1 operate the lock manually and some one to operate the hatch the person operating the hatch will have to pull very hard or may even need to pry it open while pulling on the door handle put something over the bumper so as not to scratch it and use a tire iron or something along those lines it will take a little effort but you can do it.

Hi, You would need to take the back of the back seat out to get into the trunk area to release the catch this means all the back seat needs to be removed to unjam the lock. Please leave me feedback, Malcolm Campbell.

How do I open the hatch

Unfortunately, the 04 Golf does not have a back-up release lever on the inside of the trunk lid so there are only a few options. You can try and get the trunk motor/latch to work again or remove the plastic trim on the inside of the hatch to gain access to the inner workings.

The trunk latch is released by a electric motor when you press the release button on the drivers door or by holding down the trunk release button on the remote. If you can hear the electric motor in the hatch moving when trying either of these methods, then your problem is most likely a broken plastic lever that connects the motor to the latch.

Some Golf/GTI models had a lock cylinder in the exterior handle on the hatch that can be used to gain access to your interior.

If none of these methods are working for you, then the last resort is to climb into the interior and remove the trim from the back of the hatch. There are screws tucked into the grab handle pockets on the trim that need to be removed before pulling the plastic off (the trim panel is held on with metal spring-like clips that sometimes come off the plastic and stay on the hatch and can easily be removed from the hatch and re-installed onto the plastic trim.

Hope this gives you a good place to start.

remove the rear seat ; if needed; crawl to the back of the hatch and release the hatch lock from inside using a blade screwdriver or, have a locksmith at the dealer make a new key by code using your vin number

Trunk

Had a question about this yestrerday, they had a blanket caught in the hatch.
If you can not get the latch to release from the outside, you may have to take the panel off on the inside and try to unbolt the latch.

My trunk latch is jammed on my 1995 Jaguar XJ6, not an electrical problem. How can I get it to open?

Have you tried using the actual key? If not, try inserting the key in the trunk hole while holding it to the open position, rock the trunk up and down. You may have a strap or something caught in the latch.

My 1992 saab 9000's hatch wont open when i put the key in and turn it, there is no release tab in the hatch area and no buttons on the dash to open it. what do i do to get it working? there isnt a saab...

Your best bet is to let the back seats down and crawl into the trunk. You can then remove the screw tabs holding the vinyl panel covering the hatch. After removing the hatch covering use a flashlight to see the linkage for the lock. Now you can open the hatch easily by just pressing the spring loaded portion on the lock mechanism.Voila.

Back hatch door closed on strap of backpack-now can't open door

Try pressing down on the trunk /hatch and at the same time turn the key to try and open it. It might take a lot of downware pressure to finally get it to come open.
