there are two wires that attach to the solenoid on the starter, one large and one smaller. the smaller one has a bent " tang " on it and i was wondering what the proper placement of this tang is.

Why would the fuse to fuel pump burn when i try to start my 98 ford ranger

Short to ground, or short to the positive side of the starter solenoid between solenoid and Starter positive lead. "electricity follows the path of least resistance". See if you an run a tempory positive from battery to the fuel pump (after disconecting fuel pump and it will run. Or if you have an ohm meter check the resistance between ground and it's positive terminal disconnected from it's power lead. If it shows no resistance there is an internal short to grown and thus blowing fuse. If shows some resistance, it should be good. Measure resistance of the positive lead to the fuel pump still disconnected and ground. If zero, that lead is pinched and grounded to the frame thus blowing fuse. This lead connects to what is known as fuel pump relay. That may be the problem too. Good luck.

Need a diagram of wiring for starter solenoid/1992/ford/ranger

Not much to the solenoid, but I'll attach a wiring schematic for 3.0 and 4.0. Be careful not to touch the two post together on the solenoid or it will start right up on you! One lead goes directly to the starter and the other goes to the positive lead on the battery. Good luck.

I have a 98 Ford Windstar and replaced the starter. But now when I try to hook up the positive cable on the battery the starter starts working without using the key. what is the problem?

The small wires on the starter are connected wrong, or the large wire is touching the small post.
Look closely at the solenoid on the starter and make certain that you've wired the large wire to the right place and that everything is connected properly.
If necessary, look at a shop manual to see the proper wiring of the starter.

Is it the fuel pump if i always have to push start my 1988 ford ranger? i charged up the battery many times it just turns over and over but fine when i push start it.

Find the starter solenoid. Follow the positive battery cable to the black round solenoid. There should be a small wire attached to it that is red with a think a green tracer. Remove that wire and then try to start. If it starts replace the ignition module.

Wiring Diagram for 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0

if u can gain access to the ignition switch wiring use a testlight and probe each wire while turning the ignition at start position.one of these wires shld have power during starting position and release it again to confirm.this wire goes directly to the trasmission multi lever position swicht (mlp).this MLP is mounted just outside the transmission shifting lever ganged together.Trace the corresponding return wire using the testlight. You may need someone to help you do the job.The return wire usually go to a relay on your fuse box on the engine compartment. Then from relay to the starter.

Hello, i need instructions on how to wire a replacement solenoid in my 1995 ford ranger pickup, 4 cyl. The directions in the package only account for 3 wires and i have 4 wires going to my origional...

Starter solenoid???? 2 large posts and 2 small posts on old one or 2 large and 1 small? the one large wire goes to the starter(rear post), all the others goes on the front post. little wire goes on the little post, if the old one has 4 posts, then you have the wrong solenoid.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that won't start. I

Make sure you have voltage on the big red wire. Check for votage at the small wire when in the start position. If you do not have power at the small wire check the neutral safety switch or clutch switch for power in the start position. Sounds like one of those is your problem. You didn't state if you had an auto or manual trans. Good luck.
