this problem is most likely not the neutral switch at all but the factory VATS (vehicle anti-theft system) acting up, GM neutral switches will very rarely fail, and if they do u can get it started by jiggling the shifter in both park and neutral gear positions.

By passing something isnt the answer when its a safety issue.

The switch prabably isnt the problem.

For anyone to help diagnose this we need to know..

    Did it crank over.

Or was there no responce., NO crank situation.

A starter can act up intermittantly like your describing. Smack it with a hammer a few times and it may start.

I just wondering why you think its a safety switch issue. If you tried to jump the starter and it still didnt start you would know its a starter issue.

The switch in question is either open or closed. Unpug the connector and try,, then jump the connector and try. If its a switch issue this will bypass it.

You'll need to probe the switch and have some one turn on and off the ignition key to start and probe wire's till you get to the one that's flashing that's the one for starter, then revers your test light and probe other wire with key off, where test light lights up that is ground stay away from those the other one's jump voltage to them till starter engages, jump wire to that one .

Maybe a bad Neutral Safety Switch.
  • Neutral safety switch sends a signal to the on-board computer to allow the engine to start and to engage the transmission
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start and/or transmission will not shift out of park. Here's a link to what it look's like.

Where is the starter relay located on a 1992 olds 88 royale

It's piggybacked on to the starter.
1992 olds 88 royale starter solenoid Google Search

Also, check the neutral safety switch - Put your foot on the brake and put the car in neutral. Then try to start it. If it starts the neutral safety switch is bad. It could be the ignition switch. It could be to starter solenoid. Does it have an inertia switch? They rarely go bad but I have seen it.

Will a faulty neutral safety switch cause a car not to turn over?

Yes, the neutral safety switch prevents the engine to be started except in park or Neutral. When the switch is faulty, it will not start anymore in any position.

Suzuki xl 7 2006 neutral switch

this is the PRNDL switch , prindle,
sure neutral works, you never started in neutral so it never wore out
and is the first test. to this page.
he PRNDL switch is bad, the park contacts are burned up, they all do that , when old, all.
you have only 2 choices, a new switch (best) or take yours off
dismantle it, (done many) and clean it and see if the contacts inside
can be recovered. some can , some cant.,
wear and damage have no limits.
only looking finds the truth in every case, in tests.

btw , suzuki will charge you 2 times what its worth to buy one.
so get one from NAPA, or other find stores. (not the zone)

1965 thunderbird dead electrical

Unless it was different back then, the switch should allow starting in park or neutral like today's safety switches. So it could be that switch, and your test was invalid. Unless, as I said, it was different back then.
This car has the start relay bolted on the fender, doesn't it? If it does, that relay needs to be grounded to the fender to work, might check that. And pull off the small wire to the relay and check for power on it while the key is held in start. This is the start wire from the ignition switch and should click the relay on to pass battery voltage to the starter. If power there, the relay may need replacing. If no power, work back to the neutral safety switch. Pull the connector off and check for a power signal to the connector with the key held in start. If no power, it may be the ignition switch. If it does have power, see if the switch itself has continuity with the shifter in park.
Good luck on the old T-bird.

Car will not turn over it has a new battery ,starter and selinoid and alternator. ItS a 1992 Cadillac Devvile kop

Power goes from ignition switch to neutral safety switch then to starter. Neutral safety switch used to be on steering column. Find wire harness for switch. Verify power is coming to harness when key is in start position. If not then bad ign switch or blown fuse. If power is coming to neutral safety switch but not going to starter then either bad switch or out of adjustment. Try putting car in neutral and starting then back to park. Or you have funky aftermarket alarm that is disabling starter. Also if car was financed thru small car dealership they may have put gps with starter disable on it. This helps remind you that payment is due. You can run jumper wire to starter solenoid to make starter turn over. That would be the small terminal.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park

This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

Mazda 6 won't start; battery is ok & headlight is ok

Test the neutral switch.

===

Foot on brake

MOVE SHIFTER BACK FROM PARK AND NEUTRAL 10-20 times. This will re-new the metal contacts.

Shift to netural "N"

Start engine

Put lever back to Park "P" to warm up the truck.

====

If it start from neutral and not park then you will need a neutral safety switch.

I put in a new starter and my car wont start what can i do

If it has a manual transmission, check the clutch pedal safety switch. If automatic it might be the park/neutral safety switch. Possible anti theft system issues. Good luck
