You need to flush the radiator out.
With the engine cold, remove coolant bottle cap to release pressure.
Drain engine coolant from drain plug on radiator.
With the drain plug removed disconnect the highest hose connected to a radiator.
use an hosepipe and put it in place of the disconnected radiator pipe.
turn on the water to the hose pipe and let it flush out any sludge accumulated in the radiator. after a few minutes turn off water supply, reconnect radiator hose and drain plug and refil using recommended coolant mix for your galaxy (purchased at most autofactors and garages).
Also check your thermostat as if this is faulty it would stop the flow of coolant running around your engine.

LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON SOMETIMES AND TEMP GUAGE SHOWS ENGINE GOING TO OVERHEAT. HEATER GETS COLD. IS IT THE THERMOSTAT?


There may be a thermostat problem, but your symtoms indicate low coolant level. When coolant is too low, it will not circulate, so you get no heat in car, and the coolant remaining in engine block overheats because no cool fluid coming in.
You need to fill the system up properly then look for leaks.
With cold engine, open radiator cap. Fill with antifreeze directly in radiator. Start engine, top up rad if level drops. Put heat control on Hot. Fan on low, heat on high. Gently rev engine and top up rad as needed. IF as engine heats up, it starts kicking fuild violently out of radiator, then the thermostat is bad. if not, then recap radiator, top up overflow bottle and you're done. Look under car for any sign of leaks. Steady dripping indicates a leak, then address that.

Replaced thermostat, water continues to overheat and is expelled out the cap to the water reservoir. Water heat gauge show low heat then spikes to extreme high intermittently.


You have air pockets in the system. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Then run the engine until the thermostat opens as you top off the radiator and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. If you think the car is going to overheat, replace the radiator cap, shut off the engine and wait 15 to 20 minutes to let the engine cool. Once the thermostat opens, lightly grab the upper radiator hose to feel for air pockets. You will feel the bubbles as they pass through the hose. Then have someone else rev the engine to 1800 - 2000 rpm and hold it there while you top off the radiator completely and then install and tighten the radiator cap. DO NOT DROP THE RPM BEFORE THE CAP IS SECURED OR YOU MAY BE SERIOUSLY BURNED!! Finally, let the engine run and monitor the temperature and road test. You may have to repeat the steps 2 or more times to remove all of the air but usually it will clear the first time.

Possible answers are: engine heat is too low (check thermostat), air cleaner dirty (replace), O2 sensor is worn (replace), EGR valve is not working correctly, catalytic converter is failing (replace). Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a scanner, read the code(s), and pursue to repairs. Don't just start replacing parts till it works. Hope this helps.

I generally have stopped even looking for the drain...half of them don't work right even when you do find them. Far easier and faster is to remove the lower hose. If you have a closed system with no cap on the radiator then fill through the reservoir, otherwise fill through the radiator and add to bottle after you are finished. Run the heat on high while filling and wait for thermostat to open and level to drop before final fill.

it would not be an O2 sensor, period, they would never cause a high idle, have u had this checked for trouble codes? A sticking idle speed control air bypass can cause this problem as well as a throttle position sensor, but run the codes, Kragen does it for free was well as other parts stores.

You have to disconnect the bottom tube to the radiator. Be sure if you have antifreeze in it you drain into a bucket because its sweet to bugs and the bugs will be there in an hour if you dont.

I had a similar problem. Check the temp of the upper and lower radiator hoses. If the upper one is really hot and the lower is not then there might be an air pocket in the radiator. Check the coolant to see if it is dirty or not. I changed the coolant and thermostat and drove only about 5 minutes before it overheated and the coolant became very dirty. My problem was the head gaskets. I also tried changing the radiatir cap. Hope this will help
