Yes when i hold the break to shift into reverse or drive from park the car will jump. if you open the hood you can watch the engine jump. sometimes it will happen when the car shifts from first to second but never after that and never when shifting back into park. hope this helps

yes i also have the check engine light on but have got it tested and they said that it si from the aftermarket intake i have on the car

If your saying that when you shift into gear, you hear a loud "clunk" and must hold your foot on the brake to keep the car from moving, then chances are, the throttle position sensor has failed. Do you have a Check Engine Light?

Hard to know what's wrong with aftermarket intakes, but I would still lean toward it being the TPS. What code or codes did it give?

You probably won't pass inspection with this problem and you need to get it corrected.

2004 grand am brake lights always on and I don't need to press the brake to shift into reverse or drive.

I doubt a cable is involved. It sounds like the pedal is not coming up far enough to disengage the switch.

My '97 grand prix wont shift from park. What is

Hi, you have a malfunctioning brake/park interlock. When you go to shift out of park, as you know, you have to hit the brake or the shifter won't jump out of Park into Reverse. The interlock device that in this system is probably failing.

When I try to shift from park to drive it gets tight at reverse as if doesn't want go but once out of reverse it shift normally until shifting back to park when I have to go threw reverse then it tightens...

Is it only when you go from park to reverse? Or is it just as bad going from neutral to reverse? I've noticed on mine that it's often tight if I park on even a slight slope. If it only happens when going from park to reverse, try this. Hold your foot on the brake, and put the car in drive. Keeping constant pressure on the brake, go back to park, then back into drive. Did you feel the stiffness when you had your foot on the brake?

Yes so when I hold my foot on the break to shift from park to reverse or drive the car will jump. If you open the hood you can see the engine rock. Sumtimes you will have a similar feeling when the car...

A new and significant jump or jolt upon engaging the trans could mean you have a broken front engine mount. Your car has a transverse mounted engine with a big mount holding it at the front of the car. It this mount goes bad the engine can "twist" under the hood. This sudden twisting or torque reaction can be felt until the engine runs into something solid *(usually whats left of the engine mount).

Don't wait on this one....see a mechanic A.S.A.P. A damaged mount is only going to do more damage as the engine twists back and forth under the hood. Stressing out the other connections to the engine, i.e., electrical, fuel, exhaust. Leading to more damage.

The gear shift gets stuck and won't shift into other gears. Will put it reverse and then try to put in drive and it gets stuck in reverse.

Either the shift knob or the actuator rod under the shift knob has worn out.
Remove the shift knob and pull the actuator rod (plastic) out of the shift lever and inspect it for wear or damage. If the rod is not worn or damaged, replace the shift knob and you will be good to go.
Good luck.

Gear shift knob

Usually there is a small metal clip at the bottom front of the shift knob (looks like a staple.) Just pull it out and pull the knob straight up.
