sounds like a choke problem, is it a fuel injected or carburetor vehicle?

Why doesn't it start?

Hi Ed:
There could be several possible reasons:
1) Batteries tend to lose available cranking amps as they get colder, and even more so as they get older. Even if the engine turns over, the spark can be weaker. Solution......... Newer battery, battery blanket, jump start from good sam.
2) Even multi-viscosity oils tend to get thicker as they get to minus 10 or more. That causes more resistance which makes the battery have to provide more power to turn the engine over. Back to (1)
Solution............ Block heater.
3) Colder air is more dense. This combined with a fixed amount of fuel will result in a leaner mixture. Makes it harder to ignite. That's why engines had automatic chokes. Depending on the year of your vehicle, you will have either a carb or fuel injection.
4) Spark plugs - If high mileage the gap and condition may be such that you're not getting a good spark. Combine that with the other reasons and your engine will be hard starting.
My Recommendation?......
Invest in a block heater and battery heater, and make sure your battery (including terminals, wires, and connections) is in good condition.
Keep cheerful, summer is coming.

Riding along it just shut off...when I try starting it again the engine will not turn over...but when I jump start it, it start right up ....1989 Nissan pick up truck

the starters is dead, slow .
this is a no crank, the job of the starter.
if it cant crank, it surely can never start, unless push started.
but the jumper starting is the easy way to replace the battery
so you did.

jump starts. so the battery is bad. in car.
end story.
there is one exception bad battery cables.
if you jumpted to the battery lugs, then the battery is bad
if you connected the minus jump clip to the car body
then the battery minus cable was bypass. and could be bad.
same with plus but i bet you didnt to funny things with PLUS.

I have a 2002 chev silverado 2500HD duramax 4x4, The truck starts only when given a shot of quick start in the airbox. After it runs great you can shut it off then re start it fine. It will not start...

You need new glow plugs. Im guessing you live somewhere kind of cold maybe. It starts just fine after running because the motor is already warm. Quick start will work.....or at least it did for me until I used one mornig and went to crank and BOOM. It blew my air filter case to pieces and caught the filter on fire. Starting fluid is not meant for diesel motors. If you cant afford new glow plugs what worked for me is turn on the key all the way but dont crank wait 10 sec then repeat a few times and it should crank unless its really cold out or the plugs are really bad. Trust me thats what it is. I replaced mine and now It cranks right up even when its super cold.

Cold start gives extended crank but starts colder temp longer crank fuel presure 53 psi ,temp sensors agree,4l engine no fault code

Have the battery load-checked at Autozone or similar business. Make sure to run 10w-30, or 5w-20 oil in the engine depending on start temperatures for minimal loading on the starter. Unless the engine has a lot of miles, you should not be needing any tune-up procedures yet. You could have a cold-start fuel-enrichment problem that is not sufficiently problematic to be registered by the engine computer.

I have a 1996 grand am with a 3.1v6.. Starts great when cold but when the engine gets warm you can crank on it for 10 minutes with no start, unless you push the gas pedal about half way to the floor. then...

Check the fuel pressure regulator. Take off the vac line and check for leaking gas in the top of the regulator and the hose. If you see gas, replace the regulator.
