Question about 2004 Mazda 6

At tdc the lobes on #1 are pointing towards each other but not at the same angles. two shops told me the car needed a new engine because it was run low on oil and the compression was bad. I checked the compression 125 75 150 150 the car should still run but doesn't. it died coming off the highwaqy and wouldn't restart. It spins over just fine tries to fire but not start. has a 230 code camshaft sensor

Sound like your timing belt jump a tooth, and now your getting a camsensor code, also one cylinder has 50% less compression then the others not good, also if engine is knocking you will be needing an engine.Good Luck.

You have 2 marks on the pully, one for TDC or top dead centre. The other mark is the timing mark for when the engine is running, this should be before TDC.

Ok 1990 geo storm 1,6 litre dohc replaced water pump replaced 3 valves replaced head gaskets replaced timing belt car wont start any ideas?

The car is really an Isuzu Impulse minus some of that car's more expensive features.
my guess is you drove the this 4EX1 engine until the cam belt slipped. yes> if yes you bent valves.????????????
so does compression exceed 150psi on all 4 cylinders now?
we use the cylinder leak down test in all DOHC .
if not , back to the drawing board.
if yes, the we check spark next, then try test fuel.
when did the engine last run , last week,month , year,?
who did your valves, a real machine shop or kid down the street.
a read shop pressure tests the head ,and warp checks it and
then makes sure the valves are ready for long service.
are the head bolts at 58 ft/lbs
did you use sealant on the 3 cap caps, per the FSM book.
if not , top end oiling will fail. and cams wrecked.

the 1.6l DOHC has no HLA's
the lash on valves must be checked, and this is corrected with SHIMS.

a pro machine shop does the for you,did they:?
when rebuilding engines, its best to read the factory service manual first. FSM so you know the special steps just for this engine.
ISUZU engine it is.

1.6L Twin Camshaft Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cylinder head or valve cover.
  3. Position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke.
The notch on the crankshaft pulley should align with the 0 degrees mark on the timing gear case. Make sure the rocker arms on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and the rockers on the No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and align the marks again.
  1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the cam lobe and the selective shim on the intake and exhaust valves on the No. 1 cylinder, then the intake valves on the No. 2 cylinder and the exhaust valves on the No. 3 cylinder. Note readings.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the cam lobe and the selective shim on the intake and exhaust valves on the No. 4 cylinder, then the intake valves on the No. 3 cylinder and the exhaust valves on the No. 2 cylinder. Note readings.
  3. The valve clearance obtained on the exhaust valves should be between 0.008-0.012 in. (0.20-0.30mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 (valve lash spring spacer) between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
The rear camshaft bearing caps must be removed to remove the selective shim.
  1. The valve clearance obtained on the intake valves should be between 0.004-0.008 in. (0.10-0.20mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
  2. When the adjustment is completed, install the cylinder head covers and connect the battery negative cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.

see those 2 marks, and crank must be at TDC. mark first.

IVE GOT TDC on #1 now do I put the distributer rotor pointing toward #1?

It depends which tdc ... Remember that the piston will be at TDC on both the compression and exhaust stroke.

If you turn a distributor to point the rotor rotor arm at no 1 terminal on the exhaust stroke, your timing is 180 degrees out.

Other wise yes, point the rotor arm at No1 terminal.

To check which TDC it is.. place your finger over the no 1 spark plug hole and get somebody to turn the engine for you. You'll feel the compression build up.

How do you m,ake sure that the camshafts in a 16 valve overhead cam in kia rio are timed correct i had them out and not sure hot they go , both pin up both pins down or 1 of each thanks

you will need a special tool to lock cams together when refitting the belt ,look at the cam lobes and this will tell you both valves on no1 will be closed on TDC no1 the lobes will point up and outwards with the exhaust getting ready to open next ,then look for the marks as i honestly cannot remember where they are as when i do any engine i turnt to TDC no1 and mark with white paint ,but twin cams need a special funny sort of tool to hold then in place ,if you dont have this tool then use a couple of pairs of molegrips WHATEVER YOU DO MAKE SURE YOU TURN ENGINE OVER BY HAND 360? to ensure valves are not hitting the pistons

On the 300 in-line 6 in a 1986 f150 i have the motor at tdc. For #1 but motor will not run

could be TDC on exhaust stroke.check your camshaft,it will tell you what cylindder is firing,by having the two lobes away from the rocker.if the two lobes are up the top,and about to open the valvesthats yr exhaust/inlet TDC

The two front camgear lobes should face upward at equal angles "away" from the engine.

I just replaced the timing belts on my camary and it want start what did i miss

you didnt line up the belt.. renove cover line belt up with marks on wheel.. probablly off one tooth or so

Engines don't jump time when they are not running.

Rotor will point to number 1 plug wire with every other rotation of the crank.

Get an auto repair manual to confirm you have plug wires in right order on distributor cap.

Also suggest finding Factory Service Manuals at library to get troubleshooting charts and diagnostics.

What are the valve positions when cam gear is at tdc

hi from uk hope this will explain TDC valve positions ? when the crankshaft is at tdc this means that numbers 1 and 4 pistons are both at tdc but only one of the cylinders are on firing mode so if let us say in relation to 4cyl engine the fire order is 1 3 4 2 the c/shaft is at tdc ? but for which cyl ? 1 or 4 ? to check look if the camshaft mark is at its mark or check rotor arm ?if at 1 or 4 ? if it isat no1 cyl then both of the valves for that cyl are fully closed whilst no4 cyl valves are at the point of exhaust valve just closed and inlet just about to open this is correct for tdc number 1 cyl firing stroke ?ok so far ? now then if c/shaftmark is atTDC it may be number 4 cyl ready to fire? that is because the camshaft rotates at half speed to the crankshaft soyou need to rotate crank 360 deg to bring cyls 1 + 4 to tdc again then it will be cyl 1 at tdc on firing stroke along with rotor arm at No 1 plug lead and both valves for No 1 cyl will be closed (the cam lobes will be facing up whereas No 4 cyl valves will be pointing down ) hope this is clear for you to understand? if you look at any 4 cyl engine the sequense is the same for No 1 TDC but firing orders may change ie fords 1 2 4 3 is fire order they use as apposed to 1 3 4 2 ?
