You probably have an egr valve that is sticking open. You didn`t mention if the check engine light was on so I am assuming that it was not. What you will have to do if your not familiar with the egr system then it would be a good idea to get a chiltons manual or go to the library and checkout a book there. There is a special coverage policy on your glow plugs that will cover them for 10 yrs.200k miles. But I don`t think it is your glow plugs. If you think it could be you can ohm them to see if they are open.If you do have bad glow plugs then you can get them replaced free if your vehicle falls within the vin break points. They are 3E100066-3E381049 and 3F100146-3F259028.You will find these in your vehicle identification number. They are the last eight numbers. The policy number is 07057.Hope this helps.Keep me posted and I`ll be glad to help you out more if you need me to.

Diesel engine's are hard to start in the cold. That's just the way it is, and depending on where you live its probably getting colder now. A lot of diesel engines have a heater built into the block so you can plug it in to an AC outlet to warm the block. If you have one, plug it in to warm it up before starting it.

Also, any engine that gets hard to start can use a good tune up. Take it to a shop for a full winterizing maintenance done to it.

To be honest with out, it just sounds like a common diesel engine. Best thing to do is if you have a garage, keep it in there. Or use an engine block heater.

The glow plugs are not working,or working correctly.Replace them, and fix the problem. The glow plug coming on,and going off, just tells you the relay is working correctly.

The glow plugs, some ,or a few,are not working,or working properly, most likely. But try this first, fuel filter change,if you have not already, and a antigel additive/cleaner,then if it does not clear up,it will be time for glow plug replacement.

Try an anti gel additive, first, and a fuel filter change if you have not done that already, then the glow plug replacement if that does not clear it up.

Diesel ,right my domain here ,if this is a common rail with a high pressure pump the have a air lock in system somewhere or the most common cause is the non return valve in the pump .Now what i always do here that saves a fortune is to fit a non return valve in the feed to the pump ,i cut the feed pipe at the highest piont closest to the pump and fit an aluminium (pronounced allu-min-ie-mum) not aluuminom ,bodied non return valve direction towards pump ,this will stop the fuel running back to the tank overnight ,now i dare say that some expert will say this isnt correct and the pump need to be re overhauled ,but trust this dinasaur who has worked on diesels all my life and that is this repair will cost an arm and the proverbial leg to do so called properly .Now i am not sure if these valves are available in you local motor factors wherever you live but here in spain i can buy then all different size pipe connections so i should imagine if you are a colonial cousin then they will be available in america .Trust me on this i have fitted these non return valves on Ford D series trucks .gardner engined trucks ,in fact on anything where the injector pump is higher than the fuel tank .Now the cost here to remove the pump and overhaul it is around 600/800euros depending on vehicle and thats for a diesel car ,a big truck like a 40ton merc??? horror stories ,more than i can afford thats for sure .Now another trick us old fleet fitters do is to fit a rubber hand pump as well so if the dumb truck driver runs out of fuel we can prime it up without burning the starter motor out or flattening the batteries ,which on the side of the motorway in the dark and freezing temperatures is no fun either.do both these things fit a pump and a non return valve ,prime it by hand and i bet it will start once the injectors prime up .without the glow plugs as well .best of british with it no luck need just follow the advice

Car runs and drives but 10-15 miles it dies and wont run until cools off

Dear Sir,
As you said your car stop after 10-15 miles run.and start working after 10 to 15 min wait.
It can occur due a part or unit which defer working according to temperature. it means it stop working when it got hot and start working when it get cold. this type of parts are motors which have winding unit inside it, which can stop working in high temperature, it will not happen if they are good working condition but if that is got short then it can happen.
In your case cause is the fuel pump which is in fuel tank,Till it is cold it supply the fuel to engine but after few miles run it stop sending fuel to engine ,after wait for 10 to 15 it again start sending fuel to engine when it get cold.
Fuel pump will solve your problem. if any issue please let me know. Thanks.

Dear sea_lion42, Friday 2-20-2009 11:22pm EST (USA)

Check your transmission fluid which is usually done with the engine warm and running!
If the tran fluid is low add some Lucas Trans Fluid from your local auto parts store!
The knock makes me believe your low on trans fluid!

Exchange the transmission fluid with a synthetic lube for easier engagement. Shift to second first before shifting to first helps as well.
