Hi from uk may i offer advice ? considering age of car and possible high milage ?? if you have not replaced the cambelt+tensioner which should be donearound 60,000 mls have it checked asap as if belt or tensioner fails you are looking at serious damage ! however this rubbing noise? may turn out to be some other fault like alternator bearing? or water pump but as you mention rubbing and especially grinding? i would suspect c/belt+tensioner ? so resist driving too far untill this noise is investigated sorry unable to provide a diagnosis as have not heard noise but hope you take advice given ?

Could be the serpentine belt rubbing on something, but is probably a bearing problem in the belt idler pulley. However, it could be the power steering pump, AC compressor clutch or generator. As the water pump is at the opposite end of the engine, it's probably not that.

My 95 toyota corolla makes grinding scraping noise when going uphill. It's coming from the right front of the car. Almost sounds like it's coming from the breaks or transmission. A mechanic thinks it could...

Bad motor mounts will not usually cause the kind of noise you describe they will cause more vibration to be felt at all times.

Sometimes the brake rotor dust cover plate can rub against the rotor and make a grinding/scraping sound. Raise the car, remove the wheel, and check the clearance between the dust cover and the rotor.

If your shocks/struts are bad the tire could be rubbing against the strut. Check the strut.

Check the tension pulley. It has an adjustment on top to set belt tension. On mine the bushing in the pulley went bad and made a rough rubbing sound. I replaced the entire unit as an assembly. Noise went away.
