Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Hi, if your vehicle is diesel then the chances are the starting problem is going to be to do with the glow plugs they are going to need replacing its always best to replace them all as you can never tell witch ones are bad without testing them all one by one. they are not expensive to buy but would solve your problem.
If how ever you have problems starting when its hot or cold engine then this would point to the diesel pump being at fault if this is the case then your best option would be to get a re-conditioned one and get your's exchanged this way your not paying for new parts but they will be just as good.
As for the fuel consumption this to me points towards a blocked breather hose or faulty valve in one of these hoses the problem you have is that without having a diagnostic test done you may never find the exacvt fault so it would be best to go and have a diagnostic test dont to show you exactly what the fault is going to be.
It could even be that your car just needs a good service air filters etc being blocked with muck can cause fuel usage to increase to compensate for lack of air so this is the way i would go do a service first and replace the glow plugs and then give it a try it should then start fine and run good.
Its also worth once a month go to a filling station and buy a fuel line cleaner these are cheap tp buy and it just pours into your tank when you top your tank up this then runs through the whole fuel system and injectors and removes any muck and grease that could be causing you problems. A good brand is called Red X just make sure you buy the correct type ie diesel or petrol then just follow the instructions on the back of the bottle you will then need to give it a good run for at least 30min or more to ensure you have got the cleaner throught the whole system.
If on the other hand your vehicle is petrol engine then let me know then i can assist you further.
Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
