Have you had any emissions repairs done? An emissions problem not fixed right away can ruin the cats (too much fuel dumped into exhaust system -running too rich- is an example)

There was an issue with the catalytic converter heat shields, but not for the cats themselves that I am aware of. You don't have to use factory cats though - there are universal cats out there that can be fitted to your car with some cutting and welding of pipes. They are priced starting around $100 each - I'd look into that method.

Ok, the check engine light probably indicates an emissions problem that has affected the cats. If you haven't had it checked, bring it to a parts store, they will attach a hand held scan tool to the cars diagnostic port, and 'read' codes stored in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest ways to fix the problem. Did the dealer do this already to determine there was a problem? j-del is correct, you can get universal fit cats much cheaper than dealer installed. Make sure any other issues are corrected so the cats aren't damaged again. (the other issues being other problems that triggered the check engine light to go on)

2004 nissan armada heater only blows cool air

Hello! There is a Technical Service Bulletin TSB # NTB07-017 which calls for the replacement of the Heating and Cooling unit...I would suggest having the dealer inspect the unit when you bring their attention to this Bulletin #...There are several reasons that you do not have heat...Blocked heater core...Defective door controls...Or simply a bad thermostat...When the engine reaches operating temperature is the upper radiator hose hot an hard?...With the heat control turned to high are both heater hoses hot?...This would eliminate the thermostat and a blocked core if the answer to both questions is yes...That leaves the heat/cooling control unit and a trip to the dealer with the TSB # is in order...Guru...saailer

P2404 how to fix

You will not be able to repair this yourself. There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on that code which requires the PCM to be reprogrammed which must be done by a Mazda dealer. It may or may not be covered under warranty regardless of age/mileage. Write down the TSB # before going to a Mazda dealer. http://www.AboutAutomobile.com/TSB/2003/Mazda/MAZDA6/Emission+Control

2002 Passat, 30 valve V6 has oil leaking on exhaust manifold. VW dealer says its the cam adjuster seals. It looks to me like its just the valve cover gaskets but I can't get an engine schematic to see the...

I have a 2000 Passat V6. They told me that same thing. To replace the gaskets is easy. You just remove the covers and the air filter box and unscrew the 6 bolts holding the valve cover on it and there you go. You want to clean around the gasket service and add a little bit of sealant to the edges. Replace the old gaskets and put everything back together, be careful not to overtighten the bolts, can flatten out the gasket and cause oil leak again. On the right side of the engine, you have to remove the coolant box to get to it. Same procedure....

2002 CAMRY AIRCONDITIONER WONT RUN ( COMPRESSOR) LOOKING FOR RELAYS.

-ello, and welcome to FixYa.

The first thing you need to do is replace the probably bad AC Magnet Clutch relay with an updated relay.

The part number on the side of the bad relay is 90987-02022

Buy a replacement relay from a Toyota dealer, part number 90987-02028

This should get you fixed up, there is a Technical Service bulletin issued that address this concern.

The relay is in the main fuse/relay panel under the hood.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for advice.

There is an old TSB Technical service bulletin that covers this concern. You will need to call or visit the nearest Ford or Lincoln dealer and they should be able to look in the OASIS databank.

VW P421 code

This is a common problem with V6 Passats. VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago.
The code is telling you that your catalytic converter (driver's side, I think) is bad. It's more than likely not bad.

VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. TSB 05-13. The cause of the error code is basically an over sensitive ECU (computer of car/engine) and the fix is to have your ECU flashed with the latest and greatest software. Depending on your mileage they might do it under warranty - you'll have to check.

It's still possible that it might be a bad catalytic converter - and the dealership might try to tell you that either way. Call VW (1-800-822-8987) and ask them about the TSB (I couldn't find it online).

Tell the dealership you want the ECU flashed - it's much much cheaper than a cat. No sense replacing it if it's not bad
There is a federal warranty on catalytic converters - 8 yrs or 80k miles...

Hope this helps!

Oil usage in 2006 passat 2.0 turbo

I had the same problem with my wife's 2006 passat turbo. We lost 2.5 quarts in 3000 miles and the warning light came on. They put us on a 1000 mile oil test and I lost 1.8 more quarts of oil. They finally agreed to replace the rings. Service tech told me that the factory rings are defective, they begin to lead after about 25,000.
