Both brake lights out

Neither brake light is working. I changed both bulbs and did not see any obvious fuse burned out. What now?

Check the stop light switch located on the upper brake pedal, it has a plug in wire, $10 part, if both lights are out, this is probably what is wrong.

Hi, the problem to me sounds like the brake light switch has either packed up or has come loose or may even need adjusting.
If you get on your hands and knees and look real close at the brake pedal now follow the pedal to where it goes through the bulk head and you will see a plastic switch attatched to the very top of the brake pedal it will have to wires coming from it.
Now some times it comes loose and can be refitted and some are adjustable but you would need to check if your make and model is adjustable as some are and some are not.
But even if you have to replace the switch they are not expensive to buy and are easy to replace but changing this will solve your problem.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

If the previous solutions do not work,I have had this problem but the issue was a little black box that plugs in under the drivers side dash to the rear of the parking brake. Do not remember what it is called.Looks like the old buzzer box.The guys at Napa new and that was all that mattered.

SOURCE: brake lights went out, changed bulbs, checked fuse, still wont work

You have to check the brake light switch which should be around the brake pedal on the upperside.
Ones located rremove the wires tht go to the switch and jump them by using a piece of wire, thn check if the brake lights come 'on'. If they do , thn its the switch tht may need replacing or even sometimes adjusting inorder to operate.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1998 ford escort wagon brake lights out. bulbs and fuses changed.

have you tested the brake light switch? it is located at the top of the arm the brake pedal is attached to, it is very common for the wires to that switch to break inside the plastic insulation, the switch testing goes like this, there should be 12 volts present at both sides of the switch with the brake pedal depressed and one side without the pedal depressed.

Lights are usually on a dual circuit! Left and right have separate fuses, check all fuses or check the fuse diagram on fuse cover or manual to identify correct fuse!

How do i fix the brake lights on my mercury sable. all the other lights work fine

Does your car have the `lamp out'indicator system? It's more complicated.
My manual shows fuse #28 , a 15 amp fuse powers the brake bulbs. Is this the one you changed?
A bulb can be out for a long time and you don't notice it,then the other burns out and you think they both went out at the same time, but they might not have, see?
So check the bulbs and make sure you got that brake switch installed correctly. don-ohio (:^)

My 2006 Jeep Liberty brake and head lights are not working. The fuse iand brake light switch is fine. What is the problem

Well considering the only other obvious thing that might be wrong is that your actual lights have burned out. It would seem strange that all of them would stop working at the same time, but you might still want to check and make sure the actual bulbs aren't burnt out.

'99 Expedition brake lights aren't turning on when pressing brake

It could be a number of things, the good news is that none of them are serious or expensive to fix.

The normal components that make up your brake circut are:

1. The brake light fuse (In the fuse box and labeled as such)
2. The brake light switch/relay - also called a stop light switch. It's under the dash, right behind the brake pedal arm. When you push the brake, it sends a signal to the lights which turns them on. Think of the dome light switch in the door jam of your truck. When you open the door, it releases the switch and your dome light pops on. Same thing with the brake light switch.
3. The bulbs in the tail lights and the 3rd brake light.
If none of them are working, it's most likely a fuse or the switch/relay under the dash. If it's the switch, it's a $12 part. Obviously fuses are only a couple bucks.

Brake lights not working on 2003 E 350

Have you checked the fuse for the brake lights and have you checked the brake light switch.
The brake light switch is directly above your foot when it is placed on the brake pedal.

Only headlights work, 91 4dr EX

ok supaxang, could this solution be as simple as replace the 2 rear bulbs? The brake light and tail light (parking light) are the same bulb, 2 filaments, one for brakes, one for tail lights. If the the tail light filament burns out, the brake light will continue to work ok. It is quite possible that both tail lights burned out, and the brake light filaments are good and still working. Replace w/ bulb #2057. Let me know if this fixes it, if not, I'll keep working on it.
