Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

03 Jetta overheating when driving, ok when idiling? Coolant level, radiator fan fuse and belt all ok? What ive seen online probably water pump, but could be sensor or thermostat? Whats most likely and rough cost at dealer? thanks

My Nissan urban keeps overheating after it got overheated what could be the cause


Cooling fans not turning on, check to make sure the cooling fans are running when overheating occurs. Not enough coolant in the cooling system, check the coolant reservoir make sure the coolant is at at the maximum level when combustion engine is completely cool,if your coolant is low add coolant to the maximum level. (1)Start combustion engine, let it warm up but not over heat. Turn off combustion engine, when it cools completely the coolant reservoirs level will be lower . Add more coolant and keep repeating (1) until the coolant level stays the same after combustion engine completely cools down.Sensor that tells the cooling fans to turn on defective. Non functioning thermostat. Broken impeller inside Water Pump. Clogged radiator. Clogged water jackets in combustion engine. Broken drive belt. Hi I have 2009 twin turbo diesel land cruiser which is starting to overheat when idling


1. It might not be getting enough air through the radiator because the radiator is dirty, the fan isn't pulling enough air through because of a slipping belt, missing belt or bad fan clutch.
2. The coolant might not be transferring heat as much as it should due to deposits in the radiator, deposits in the engine or low coolant level.
3. The water pump impeller may be spinning on the shaft [not likely but it can happen] or the water pump pulley may be slipping on the drive belt.

Overheating problem


overheating sound like faulty thermostat.thermostat either sticking close or could have blown headgasket if you see a lot of white smoke coming out of exhaust.if headgasket is leaking check engine oil should look milky.also check water pump look around weep hole or see coolant leaking around water pump replace water pump.also check water pump drive belt.make sure drive belt not loose slipping.

OVERHEATING CAN BE CAUSE BY MANY THINGS LIKE FAULTY THERMOSTAT AND FAULTY RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP,TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM NEED 50 / 50 WATER AND ANTIFREEZE.LOOK FOR WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAK, IF COOLANT LEAKING OUT WEEP HOLE WATER PUMP BAD NEED REPLACING.CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT LEVEL, YOUR RADIATOR OVERFLOW JUG SHOULD HAVE COOLANT AT THE FULL COLD MARK IF NOT KEEP ADDING COOLANT INTO COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT STOP DROPPING AND FULL COLD MARK, IF OVERFLOW COOLANT JUG WAS EMPTY RADIATOR IS LOW ON COOLANT.WHICH CAUSE AIR IN COOLANT SYSTEM KEEPING THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FROM BEING SUBMERGE IN HOT COOLANT WHICH TURN ON THE COOLANT FANS.WHEN ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GET CERTAIN SET TEMPERATURE LIKE 190 DEGREES THE PCM AND COOLANT SENSOR WILL TURN ON COOLANT FANS, IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING COOLANT FANS NOT WORKING EITHER YOU HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CHECK COOLANT FANS FUSE AND RELAYS. I have a 1996 volkswagon jetta and it continuosly running hot as if it is not getting coolant. I would refill it and if i make some speed after couple minutes the temperature gauge goes up past the normal...


it sounds like the cooling system is not working properly, did you check coolant levels? then check the fans are spinning when they should be? if that is all ok check fuses for cooling system aka fan fuse, now would be a good time to mention the thremastat, if it dosnt fully open it means the colling fluid will not cycle threw the engine and it will not cool the engine properly, also note radiators that are leaking will result in low collant levels and system overheating after a short drive. fluid air and fluid moving threw engine is used to keep it all working properly, i suspect the thermastat

Overheating


There could be one of many things wrong. Does the fan run when it is overheating? If not, it is in the fan,relay,sensor,or wiring. If it does. I would look over the front of the radiator (& or the AC condensor) and see if there is debris blocking the fins (air flow). Even one thin layer of grass can cause this. Then I would recomend changing the thermostat. Cheap and is the problem in many cases. Also check the fan belt to the water pump for tension and it's condition. Slipping belts can cause this. The radiator can be plugged up internally and may be the real problem if the other solutions do not fix it. You can remove it and have it rodded out is best or buy a new one (more expensive). Still yet you probably don't have but could have a head gasket problem or cracked head. Due to the coolant level, It is not that. Last is, once in a while I have seen the water pump impeller come loose or the impeller literally deteriorated and could cause this. My best guess would be the thermostat. Second guess is the radiator.

Overheating


Hi,

Most normal causes for overheating would be:
  • clogged radiator,
  • insufficient coolant level (radiator and reservoir);
  • too soft radiator hoses;
  • defective/leaky water pump (impeller);
  • water pump belt/tensioner;
  • thermostat (mechanical);
  • thermal switch;
  • radiator fan, fan clutch;
  • fan relay;
  • fan fuse.
In some instances, the fan only works in conjunction with the A/C and/or heater and therefore would only work if either of those two are enabled.

Should your particular vehicle be using a radiator fan with clutch, that could also cause the fan blades not to spin even if the fan motor is turning.

Pls check the above mentioned components.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
