Re: Where is radiator to put Antifreeze
The radiator is in the front of the car under the hood (the honeycomb-like structured box approx 3 inches thick and about 2 feet wide). There is no special radiator for the antifreeze, but it is the same as the car radiator containing the engine coolant.
But you fill in the antifreeze/coolant thru the expansion vessel. It is a plastic container with 'MIN - MAX' marking on it. You can see the fluid inside. It has usually something like 'coolant' and 'hot - open carefully' written on the cap.

when the car is cold, take off the radiator cap. Start the car and let it run for a while. While the car is running, watch the radiator opening for the antifreeze to start circulating. add antifreeze as the level dips down, when the antifreeze starts to spill out, (A Lot) put the Radiator cap back on, as the antifreeze was circulating, it was pushing the air out of the line,through the cap opening and when the antifreeze starts spilling out, it means the air is completely out of the line.
Remove the fan and shroud. Put a large (!) drain pan under the radiator and drain it - if you're lucky it'll have a drain petcock near the lower radiator hose. Unscrew the radiator hose clamps and disconnect the upper & lower radiator hoses. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines if they also go into the radiator (some do, some don't)... you'll want a second, small, drain pan to catch the transmission fluid.
Now unbolt the clamps that hold the radiator to the radiator support plate (across the front of the car). Lift the radiator straight up, being sure not to lose the rubber mount isolator pads. Remove it from the car.
Replacement is pretty much the reverse of disassembly - put the new radiator in place CAREFULLY so you don't damage it, put the mounting clamps back on, reconnect the transmission cooler lines and radiator hoses, check the petcock (if the new radiator has one) to be sure it's closed snugly, reattach the fan and shroud.
Now refill the cooling sytem with all NEW antifreeze/coolant and water mix, about 50/50. DO NOT reuse the old antifreeze. Take close note of exactly what brand and type of antifreeze you used, and never NEVER mix any other brand/type of antifreeze with it, only exactly the same brand/type.
After refilling the cooling system, start the car & check the transmission fluid. Top off if necessary.
Was it knocking in the radiator when it over heated if so you most likely got an air lock in the system by pouring the new antifreeze in to fast. You need to add it real slow and once you think the radiator is full start the truck and let it warm up and leave the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and then add more antifreeze because when the stat opens the level will go lower. Once you are sure the antifreeze is circulating an full then you can go drive the truck. Some people use a 50 percent mix of antifreeze to water but I always use 100 percent antifreeze it runs cooler.
sytem capacity is 8.6 qts. you want a 50/50 solution, so drain alittle more than a gallon of the straight water out, and add 4.3 qts. of dexcool antifreeze or equivalent. i always go slightly stronger just to be sure, but not too much antifreeze as it doesn't work straight. no more than 4.5 qts.
First you should drain the antifreez by opening the drain plug located by the lower radiator hose. Then take the upper radiator hose off. Then take the 2 bolts out that hold the housing on. Remove the housng and there is your thermastat. Accordind to VW they want you to put antifreeze on the o-ring I use RTV a little extra help sealing just don't put a lot on. The book says to put thermastat in housing and turn 1/4 turn to right. I'm not sure why but thats what it says. TIP If you close the drain plug now and put as much antifreeze in as you can makes it easyer to get air pockets out later. Mount your therrmostast housing back to block and tighten bolts. Again put as much antifreeze in that you can them put upper radiator hose back on. Again put as much antifreeze in that you can. Now come the hard part sometimes getting all the air out of the cooling system. Put the radiator cap on but loose run the engine till the cooling fan kicks on but keep checking the coolant level. WARNING ANTIFREEZE WILL GET ABOVE 200 DEGREES
both upper and lower radiator hoses should be hot and radiator full. If both hoses aren't hot you have an air pocket that you have to get out. To do this run the engine a couple minutes after the fan kicks on then turn engine off for 5 or 10 minutes and start over keep doing this till both hoses get hot and the air the fan is blowing is hot. Once this is doe yout ready to go. I hose off any antifreeze that got one car so if you see antifreeze under car you know something is leaking and not what was spilled.
BUY YOUR RADIATOR HOSES FIRST MAKE SURE NEW HOSES MATCH THE OLD HOSES. BUY NEW RADIATOR CLAMPS AND HAVE EXTRA GALLON OF ANTIFREEZE. MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COOL IF YOU GOING TO CHANGE TOP RADIATOR HOSE REMOVE RADIATOR CAP OR OVER FLOW JUG CAP IF YOUR RADIATOR DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP FIND RADIATOR DRAIN PLUG.PLACE A CATCH PAN.OPEN RADIATOR DRAIN PLUG CATCH ANTIFREEZE. DRAIN HALF ANTIFEEZE IF YOU GOING TO REPLACE TOP HOSE AND DRAIN OUT ALL ANTIFREEZE IF YOU GOING TO CHANGE LOWER COOLANT HOSE TO WATER PUMP.WHEN DONE CLOSE DRAIN PLUG.PUT ANTIFREEZE IN A SAFE PLACE FROM PETS AND KIDS UNTIL JOB DONE. WHEN YOU REMOVE COOLANT REMOVE WATER HOSE CLAMPS THEN REMOVE RADIATOR HOSES PUT NEW RADIATOR HOSES AND CLAMPS ON HOSES TIGHTEN HOSE CLAMPS DONT OVER TIGHTEN. POUR ANTIFREEZE IN RADIATOR.CRANK ENGINE UP CHECK FOR LEAKS.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL WHEN THERMOSTAT OPENS ADD MORE COOLANT AS NEEDED.
