Most obvious question is when that happens, is the engine actually overheating or just reading that it is?
If there are no signs of overheating, I'd check that the temp sender is working correctly and that the wiring to it is not grounding somewhere. Though not "high tech" you can tape a small dial type thermometer that has readings past 240 to the upper hose and check temp when light is on compared to "normal".If readings are similar, then I'd change sender.
Also check the a/c condenser for obstructions. (leaves, bugs, plastic bags etc). That alone can cause strange temp fluctuations.

I have a 02 Grand caravan that has new radiator, termostat, one new fan. the temp gauge goes up to max hot the drops right back down in seconds. what could be the problem?

it could be you have an air lock in the cooling system
remove the rad cap from the rad, start the engine and let it run until the coolant drops (add to fill it back up) or until the coolant boils out of the rad spout.

maybe pull the heat sensor. -replace it OR clean it off, reinstall it.

My 2003 Saturn VUE is saying that I'm over-heating (both the warning light stays on, and the gauge stay pegged hot) even after my car has been sitting in the driveway for 2-3 days (or longer). There is not...

i'd change the engine temperature sender unit , or just disconnect it for a while and see if the gauge symptoms disappear , if they do then change the temp sender unit,if the symptoms remain i'd say get the OBD codes read as may have a faulty dash component

2000 acura tl coolant fan after fluid change

New thermostat, installed, saw, new coolant made a little mess filling reservoir, (normal) checked fan fuse for some reason, and condenser fan fuse (xxx ?:), and temp guage, is slightly lower on gauge (than normal?) (disconnected xxxx? quit? a bit? to get to thermosta?.t no dash warning lights have a feeling I popped a relay.

Answer:

ok, you did a coolant service with STAT,

and it failed.

tell us what works right and wrong, symptoms only.

over heating? parked, (fan never comes on)? as it hits 225F?

under heating? ( fan stuck on , up North can cause huge cold engine)

dash gauge stuck low. (thermostat wrong heat range 180f is best. see FSM for spec. on this temp. spec..

Dash guage varies.? oddly (air in system)?

Dash gauge too high.? (Stat put in upside-down or bleed hole (jiggle) not UP side. higher side of mount , trapping air.)

Does something wrong happen only driving?

leaks?

does cap on rad hold 12-14psi pressure, hot.?

if car has fan belts, are they tight? (for sure water pump does)

2005 Dodge Caravan, temp gauge has been rising to "hot" while driving. Just recently, van lurched while driving 30mph and then the check engine light came on right after. Temp gauge was normal...

I would guess that the lurch and the engine light on was telling you that the engine over heated and you may have done damage to the motor.. IF you have blown a hose or radiator or lost a lot of water then the temp gauge sender has no coolant to read so it will read as normal. because it is reading an over heated piece of metal that it is screwed into and not the coolant temperature.. Have a compression test done to determine possible engine damage. Have a pressure test done on the coolant system to find the cause of the loss of coolant. Do a flow test done on the radiator to check for blocked cores. Check operation of cooling fan especially if you have a viscous fan hub.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP

Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

The temperature gauge on my 2002 grand prix dose

the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.
