Question about 2002 Pontiac Bonneville
I have a 2002 Bonneville and whenever I start it and take off it wont shift or it lags to shift. After a while it will finally change gears and then run fine. The problem is only happening when shifting from first to second. can someone give me an idea on what it may be

SOURCE: GrandAm Tranmission shifts hard
I had the same problem in my 2002 grand am GT. After taking it to a transmission shop and them telling me that I had all this stuff wrong with it that was going to cost me about 2700$ I looked elsewhere. I had an Intake Temperature Sensor that had went bad. It was registering on the check engine light after the fact. I changed it and then found out there was a loose wire in the connector. I fixed that and havent had a problem with it since

My daughter has a 2003 with the same problem. She took it to a highly regarded transmission shop. They told her it is not the transmisison but an engine performance problem. She took it for an oil change to check the filters etc and the fuel filter is bad. I will follow up if that fixes the problem.

SOURCE: Hard Shift to 2nd Gear/next gear
Your going to have to get your car scaned for codes. Auto Zone can scan it for you for free and tell your what you'll need to fix it.
It sound's like your VSS Sensor (speed sensor) is not working and your ECM is not getting the signal from the transmission to know when to shift the gears.
Becareful not to burn out the transmission till you get it fixed. The sensor it self is not that expansive and to replace it is easy and takes about 30 min to do.
If you get a P0720 or a P0722 code, then it's your speed sensor. It's an esy fix and Auto Zone can give you instrction on how to change it.
Good luck, it takes about 30 min to change and hope this helps.
