I agree with the above. Most transmission fluids are a reddish color. Before having the fluid changed, pull the dipstick and look for yourself. It should smell like oil, and not burned. It should not look dark brown or black. Feel the fluid with your fingers. It should fel smooth and not grimy. If it exhibits any of the above signs, it needs to be changed quickly. I only suggest you check it yourself, because some of the quick lube shops are real con artists and will tell you work needs to be done that does not, so be sure you get a professional opinion and if it truly needs to be done, have it done pronto!

Be aware that changing the fluid often will have deleterious effects on older vehicles if they have been allowed to run with lack of maintenance. Meaning all new fluid could result in the vehicle shifting poorly or leaking. Just a word of caution. Best advice is to have a mechanic check the vehicle over before plunking down that hard earned cash!

If the transmission oil is black is either someone accidently put oil in the transmission or the transmission is due for some serious service. have the transmission flushed as soon as possible. Transmission fluid should be red in color. usually if it is a dark red almost black and smells burned the transmission has been worked very hard.

Accidentally drained transmission fluid instead of oil. Bought 2008 Toyota Tacoma used and manual does not provide info on where transmission fluid is put in.

Normally the transmission fluid off pumped from the side of the engine block. You have to look from the under side of the vehicle. Good luck....

I just bought a 2006 Tacoma Prerunner V-6 that just hit 70,000 Mi. The truck didn't come with an owners manual. The Maint. light came on at 70 k. I understand it will come on when its due for an oil...

Other than the oil change I would recommend replacing the spark plugs, change the coolant, air filter, cabin air filter, rotate the tires and check brakes, change transmission fluid and differential fluids and transfer case if 4x4.

I just bought my son a 1999 Toyota Celica SX. During the gear change (between gear change), a strange noise coming from the engine/car as if some things are loose etc. I would greatly appreciate an expert...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Since this is a newly bought car, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid and motor oil. Motor oil is for security purposes, to remove sludge just in case.

Regarding the transmission fluid, the fluid may be burnt that's why it makes some noise. This is common when fluid is burnt or old. Once the fluid is replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Transmission oil filling

I changed the transmission oil on my pu truck ford f150. It was easy.
You'll need a transmission filter and transmission oil ask the serviceman how many qts you need.
Remember that you will have to check the dipstick and see that the two holes on it are covered with red trans fluid while the engine is running. Remember while the engine is on then you check to see if you need to add which you certainly will have to keep adding until it is full. Sorry i didnt give you more details.

Toyota Prius 2008 - Transmission or or fluid?

Here is the answer that you are looking for: Never.
The auto trans fluid in a Prius is what we call "World Spec", and never needs to be changed. Why? Because the Prius trans fluid is not used for hydraulic pressure or cooling the ATF fluid due to the lack of the aforementioned hydraulic pressure. All that the ATF does is perform a "lubrication" function. As long as there is no contamination of the fluid (such as being in a flood), do not bother with it.
