Question about 2000 Chevrolet Venture

Will not spin over with ignition switch. can jump out start relay and it will spin over. park nuetral switch is working. no indicatian of being in security mode with scan tool

Can you verify if start relay receives 12 volt when key is turned possible coil problem or switch contacts in relay if no 12volt some chevys have a switch at bottom of column

Why if i replaced the starter and its relay by the radiator and batt on 96 cavalier still not starting what alse can it be


Hi Juan:
It's possible that the relay (solenoid) is not connected properly.
If you're jumping the relay Power to Power (big wires) you're bypassing the relay so don;t really know if it is working.
If you jump the Power (in) wire to the activator terminal it should spin the engine over. If not, the relay would be suspect. .

I think the purple wire (or maybe the yellow) from the neutral safety switch goes to the coil side of the starter relay, turning it on so power is sent from there to the starter solenoid. You could check for this signal to the relay with a test light. The key must be held in start while you probe the other two terminals for the relay. If the signal is there, either a bad relay or the coil side of relay is not grounded properly. It is possible that the coil side ground is the neutral safety switch-grounding the relay's coil side only in park or neutral-in which case the nagging light on shifter (between off and run, it only works?) may be telling you the safety switch is the problem.

You may need to look at a wiring diagram, Greg. But the starter relay is the last component in the start circuit before the starter solenoid. From battery to ignition switch to "crank" fuse to neutral safety switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter-and back to battery through ground. That is the start circuit. Just that the wiring tying them all together makes it complicated.

Went to start van this morning and it wouldnt even try to start. have power to starter, its good, jumped it out, only thing i can think of is ignition assembly. i turn key and nothing happens.


not so fast. need to check if you are making connection from ignition switch to trans range switch (only lets it start in Park or Nuetral) to starter relay and then to starter,

Try to start vehicle in park, new battery,alternator,serpentinebelt,dash signals come on,nothing. Try to start in neutral, ok. Try again inpark, nothing, then neutral, nothing? Park safty switch, or...


Try holding the key in the crcnk position while you slowly move the shift lever from park to nuetral and back to park. If at any point the vehicle tries to start while you are doing this than its the nuetral safety switch. From your description it sounds like the nuetral safety is the problem.

My car does not start or turn over. The radio works and so does the fan.


When you turn the ignition key to start your car, voltage from the battery flows through the ignition switch to the Park/Neutral safety switch and/or brake pedal or clutch pedal safety switch (you have to push the pedal down before the circuit will complete) to the starter relay or solenoid. When the relay or solenoid is energized by voltage from the ignition switch circuit, it closes a contact that routes more power from the battery directly to the starter to crank the engine. The starter motor spins, pushes the starter drive gear to engage the flywheel and cranks the engine.

Low battery (Check battery voltage, recharge if low, or jump start with another vehicle or battery charger).
Loose or corroded battery cables (Inspect, clean and tighten BOTH ends of BOTH battery cables).
Bad starter relay wiring connections or ground connection (Inspect, clean, tighten wiring connections).
Bad starter relay/solenoid (Check for voltage at relay, if relay has voltage but there is no "click" when key is turned to start, replace relay).
Bad starter (Jump battery voltage direct to starter to see if it spins, or remove starter and have it bench tested at auto parts store).
Damaged starter drive or teeth on flywheel (Remove starter and inspect drive gear and flywheel teeth, replace damaged parts if necessary).
Bad ignition switch (Check to see if voltage reaches starter relay/solenoid when turn to start. If not, check for open P/N switch and brake or clutch pedal switch. Replace ignition switch if defective).
Open P/N safety switch, or open Brake Pedal Safety Switch (automatic transmission) or open Clutch Pedal Switch (manual transmission). Bypass switch with jumper wire to see if engine cranks, or use test light or voltmeter to check for voltage passing through switch when ignition is turned to start.
Engine seized due to bearing failure or internal damage (Use socket and long handle to see if engine can be turned by hand, if not engine is locked up).
Engine hydrolocked due to coolant leak from leaky head gasket (Use socket and wrench to see if engine rotates, remove spark plugs and see if coolant comes out or engine can not be cranked with plugs out).

My husband just needs to know where is the location of the starter relay on our '97 chevy Blazer 4.3 engine, 4x4? Is it near the passenger side or the drivers side?


When you go to start the engine you are actually sending power from the ignition switch through a 20 amp fuse [crank fuse] then through the Park/Nuetral safety start switch and finally to the starter relay [located at the center rear of the engine compartment] This relay then sends a more powerful current flow down to the starter solenoid located on top of the the starter which then closes and allows full battery voltage from the large battery cable to energize and spin the starter. I don't think I've ever had to replace a starter relay on these but have replaced a large number of starters with bad solenoids and bad Park/nuetral switches. The "crank" fuse could also be bad but that is also pretty rare.

When you turn the key, does the starter relay click? Could be the heavy connection from the battery to ground or to the starter solenoid. Make sure these connections as well as the battery terminal connections are clean and tight.

1992 jeep yj will not turn over


Try jumping the solenoid,pull the actuator wire off the solenoid(the small one)This will engage the starter so make sure your in nuetral or park,run a wire from the solenoid actuator to the positive battery post,if the starter engages your ignition switch or starter relay have become faulty,if the starter does'nt engage the solenoid has gone bad.Post back if you need more help.

2004 Stratus won't start. No clicking or sound when turn key.


my Buick did all those things and I had water in the oil and probably in a cylinder or two from what I judge was a cracked block from freezing, Gave it away.
