My 2000 olds silhouette will start and run, as long as you have your foot on the gas, but as soon as you take it off it dies. Will not idle. Any ideas??

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

2001 olds silhouette engine overheats

Time for Intake Gaskets and possibly head gaskets, very common problem with these, the intake gaskets go bad and the coolant actually burns in the cylinder and of course the cylinder pumps air into the coolant system because of intake gaskets being bad. :-(

Hi all, Nissan Primera, P12, 2002 is over revving, especially when idling. Sprayed the MAF sensor and changed the air filter but that didn't make any difference. It also uses lots of petrol sinc

Sounds like a vacuum leak or a bad intake manifold gasket. Take engine cleaner and spray the gasket where the intake manifold bolts onto the motor while running. If there is any change in the idle, your gasket needs to be replaced. Spray all vacuum hoses too. This is the best and cheapest way to test. Let me know how you do please

My 2002 Olds minivan is overheating. I changed thermostat and flushed radiator, bled the air from the air valves and changed the temp sending unit. It does not leak fluid and waterpump and belt are on...

My 02 silhouette just started having the same problem and I was told it was the head gasket. I was told mini vans with the 3.4 engine have this problem after a certain amount of miles. My brother has had this happen in 2 different vans with same engine. Hope this helps.

Enginelight on, code P0171,P174

Classic! These codes typically come when the throttle body air plenum gasket cracks. The engine will usually idle rough as well. If it is idling rough, you can spray carborator cleaner around the throttle body with the engine running and you should immediately notice a difference.
The plenum gasket is about $30.00. You need to remove the fuel rails and intake manifold to replace it. Not too bad a job for a garage mechanic. Roughly 2 hours.
I let mine go for about a year before fixing it and was sorry I did after seeing how easy it was to correct. Car runs great now.

Rpm is at 3400 why want it idle down at start. this is on a 2002 pontiac grandam?

idle air control motor may be stuck wide open or intake manifold air leaks (gaskets). the idle air control motor is on the side of the throttle body.

Lower intake manifold gasket leaking 02 Olds Silhouette

This is basicly a very time consuming job rather than a physically hard one to complete. In order to replace the gasket you must remove the intake plenum, throttle body, and misc. vacuum hoses. The wiring harness connections must also be disconnected. Finally the intake manifold is exposed. The bolts holding the manifold to the block are removed exposing the leaking gasket. After removing the push rods and placing them in the correct order to be replaced the gasket and sealants can be removed. Finally replace everything in reverse order. Be sure to consult a GM manual for correct bolt torch specs. The correct specs for the manifold bolts usually come with the gasket. Make sure to change your oil a few times after this job in case any coolant entered the block. Also, change the thermostat and the oil seal on the distributor half shaft cap while you have everything off. Good Luck
