It should be on the end of the motor. Usually the same side of the motor that has the alternator and drive pulleys.

Timing OK?

You did it the right way. If you tried to make a full cam revolution you would have hit the pistons with the valves. Put the lower timing cover and crank pulley back on. If the cam marks are aligned right and the mark on the lower timing cover lines up with the mark on the crank pulley, you're good to go.

Drove it home everything was ok! went out the next

sounds like a broken timing belt, timing belts like to break during engine cranking and engine shut down. there are inspection holes in the timing cover,if you can't determine, remove top half of timing cover and check belt for slap,if there's slap,it's broke.

I'm ok at working on cars i was wondering if i can pull out a water pump in my wife subaru forester or is it to much and do i take it in

sorry didnt see the bit at the top, depending on how good you are with cars it can be relativley easy its on the front of the engine you may have to move a few things to get to it im not that educated on suburu forresters so im not to sure, but it should jus be a few bolts and a belt you have to remove to get it off, if that helps at all

The water pump

ok this is fun lol.jack the car up and put it on a jack stand, then you will have to pull the drivers side tire off.now you need to put a jack under the motor and unbolt the driver side motor mount. lower the motor down it will only go so far.now for the fun part.you got pull the crank pully off there is one bolt in the center of the pully.once you get that off pull the timing cover off top and bottom. there will be 2 belts one is the timing and one is for the water and oil pump. the water pump it the one closest to the back of the motor. it would be best if you replace the timing belt since your already in there.make sure you get ALL the old gasket off the block.you dont want to have to do it twice.oh yeah loosen the tensioner pully to pull off the timing belt it right above the crank one bolt in the center also.if you didnt move anything you should be able to put the new timing belt back on with now problems if you did move something then you got to put it back in time to do that make sure the #1 cylinder is top dead center of the compression strok then turn the cam gear till where its says up on the spoke is pointing up.after that put everything back together and you should be good to go. hope this helps if you have anymore questions just let me know.have fun lol

Water pump

I don't have pictures for you but here is instructions:
Drain all the coolant.
Jack up the car on the front passenger side.
Remove the passenger side wheel.
Put a jack under the oil pan.
Detach the engine mounts on the passenger side of the car.
Remove all external belts.
Remove the upper timing belt cover bolts
Lower the engine using the jack.
Remove the water pump pulley. (3 bolts)
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
Disconnect the coolant line running across the front of the engine from the water pump. (2 bolts on a flange)
Pull the timing belt.
Pull the water pump.
Installation is just reversed.

If you need images, go to your local library. I never bought a manual, where is the fun in that? LOL plus everything I need to know can be found on the internet.

There is a noise coming from the timing belt cover on my 2002 with 70000 miles. I took the top idler off but it seems OK. Now I can't get it back on as the belt has jumped.

To get the belt back on, you need to slack the belt. You might as well just replace the timing belt. But, to do this, you need to remove all of the front engine covers. The tensioner at the lower right needs to be depressed before you ca get the top idler back on.
